To clarify things for those outside Chile, what are the new trains going to be used for?

I assume the new Rancagua Xpress will run on the same tracks that the other major services south of Santiago use?

Tram to link La Serena and Coquimbo
08 Feb 2017

CHILE: A public consultation is being held for the proposed construction of a tramway linking the centres of La Serena and Coquimbo. Tenders are due to be called in the second half of this year, and work could begin by the end of the year, with opening expected in 2021-22.

The US$350m project envisages a 22 km tram line with around 30 stops, giving a journey time of around 50 min between the two cities.

A brief history of that project:

On July 2008, someone uploaded a video to YouTube with an idea of a possible commuter rail-like system to link La Serena and Coquimbo.

A map that shows that idea (the North is at the upper right corner and the yellow line is the Pan American Highway):

Later, in 2010 a congressman presented an "updated" idea with less stations:

After that, a consulting company presented an idea of a mass transport system for both cities, which was declared of "public interest" by the government. After some studies, they decided that a line going trough Balmaceda avenue (that goes parallel to the Pan American Highway linking the two cities) would be the best option. It will have 30 stations (approximately), and the most possible design of the line will be like this (it could have some variations in the future, when the official project will be presented):

Here are some renderings made by the consulting company (SICE Chile):

Going trough Aldunate street, downtown Coquimbo

Passing along San Pablo Hospital, Coquimbo

Balmaceda avenue

Francisco de Aguirre avenue
