Ugly? I think it is beautiful. Even if it is just an area for roads, having an open "pasture" amongst the giants is a welcome relief. They could do stuff to "add lipstick" and make the area look nicer, but the openness is good enough for me.

I'm not saying they should build up this area. This should be a nice public space.

Decent urban masterplan and some landscape architects could turn this place into one of the prettiest in NYC.
Again, you don't get it. Those roads lead up to the Brooklyn Bridge. Without them the bridge couldn't function. Can't get rid of them.

Again, you don't get it. You don't need to have huge intersection with snails just to make road connection with a bridge. Get it now? I doubt it... Next time I will use AutoCad... Well, actually paint would do.

There are several road connections in a single spot there. Hence why you need 'snails'. The Brooklyn Bridge is an important connection from downtown Brooklyn to the FDR. If you get rid of the ramps which connect directly to the FDR, then you need to funnel even more traffic though Manhattan.

You mean this obsolete Moses'es highway destroing waterfront from the east? Get rid of it and bring the city back to the water.

You know.. This won't have an impact on the skyline but this would certainly have an imposing impact standing along park row/ city hall park. I think this will actually turn out nicely.

I agree , VG, but it will be obscured when J&R is developed.

True. I forgot about the prospect of the J&R site.

Actually, the waters around NYC have been getting cleaner for years. Whales are returning in greater numbers.

Here's one off Rockaway:

To have people think of the east river as a place to recreate and may be even swim? That would be interesting!

Actually, while we're on this topic, there's this group that wants to build basically a floating pool with a built in filtration system so that you can technically swim in the East River. It's called +Pool and it's actually gotten a lot of backing and hopes to open by 2017 if they're lucky. http://www.pluspool.org/

The "filtration"

Pretty wild, huh? Apparently Berlin wants to do something similar with their river.

But what's more likely to happen is Bjarke Ingel's Big U, which actually has over $300 million in funding already. http://www.rebuildbydesign.org/proje...inal-proposal/

There's also Scott Stringer's plan for a park under the Bklyn Bridge but idk what's going on with that. People probably won't be going into the East River any time soon but they will at least have far greater access.

Seems like between some of the attractive buildings going up like 5 Beekman, 50 West Street, etc. and public works projects like these parks, lower Manhattan will be something of a hot spot

New York in general hasn't been this appealing since the beginning of the last century

I like this building. I hope they do something better with the spires though, but I shouldn't judge on renderings alone.

I really hope that this blue color is just from protective foil on the glass... It looks awful right now.

The windows on the right look black.

When those empty J&R buildings are redeveloped, this tower won't even by visible from the west.
