Some updates on Metro Bilbao Line 3 construction.

  • All the station from the first phase of Line 3 (a total of eight) are in the last stages of completion with the exception of the Casco Viejo station, which will serve as an intermodal station between Lines 1, 2 and 3 and terminus station for the regional rail services coming from Donostia-San Sebastián, Durango and Bermeo.
  • The Line 3 on its first phase will connect the northern part of the Etxebarri municipality with the center of Bilbao via the upper eastern districts (Txurdinaga and Otxarkoaga) and through the old town (Casco Viejo station).
  • The second phase would involve a new tunnel through the Artxanda mountain (already constructed) to replace the old 1-track Euskotren service that connected Bilbao with the Txorierri valley, this time reaching the Bilbao Airport. Although it is not very clear, early indications seem to point that the Euskotren commuter rail Bilbao-Lezama will be integrated into the Line 3 on the Sondika-Lezama section, although that would require a renewal of the stations and will probably not happen this year.
  • The first phase of the line (Etxebarri North-Casco Viejo-Matiko) is expected to open late during this year. All the stations will be underground with the exception of Etxebarri-North and, possibly, Casco Viejo.
  • The Line 3 is largely based on the Bilbao-Sondika section of the Bilbao-Lezama railway. Most sections of said railway within Bilbao were closed last year to accommodate for the construction of the new line.

Some photos from the Euskoscrapers forum:

Etxebarri-North station, currently Euskotren regional services pass through the station without stopping (the photo is rather old, currently the trains pass through the station and not beside it):

Access to Zurbaranbarri station:

Construction works on a tunnel:

The new stations will keep the cavern-like structure of the rest of the network:

Works on the Casco Viejo station are underway, although we still do not have a render or any idea of how the station will be, even though it will be as station of major importance. It will be located above the current Line 1 and 2 stations, whose entrance can be seen in the photo. The old Zazpi Kaleak station of the Bilbao-Lezama line was located there and was demolished for the construction of the new line:

Matiko station:

Expected openings:
  • Etxebarri North-Matiko: late 2016
  • Matiko-Sondika: probably early 2017, with a possible extension through the Sondika-Lezama line (which already exists) opening as well.
  • Sondika-Airport: Expected but unknown, a new tunnel needs to be built under the airport and a new station as well.

The Matiko station for the new Line 3 of Metro Bilbao is close to completion; the station has been visited by authorities recently. The exterior displays old photos from the city.

Bilbao tram between Guggenheim and Uribitarte stations.

Siempre agradables de ver by peiogarciagta, en Flickr

The city tram follows the course of the river linking Abandoibarra and the Guggenheim area with the Old Town and San Mames (central bus station, football stadium). Although once very criticised, the tram ended up being very helpful as it connects Abandoibarra, a very touristic area of the city and without any metro lines (yet) with the rest of the city.

Further expansions in the southern and northern ends of the line are planned, but not yet being developed. The original plan for the network involved a full circle in the city center area, which is halfway complete, with the sections between La Casilla and Abando still missing. The tram will also expand to the currently developing area of Zorrotzaurre, for which a new line will branch out from Euskalduna station and cross the river to the west. It is expected that at some point in the future this line will connect with the planned trams of Barakaldo and Leioa:

Feve (top) narrow-gauge train in the Bilbao-Balmaseda line and Renfe Aldiriak (bottom) Iberian-gauge next to the river close to Olabeaga, Bilbao. Feve connects the city with the Kadagua valley, whereas this line of Renfe Aldiriak (C1/C2) connect the left bank of the river with the city centre, both as suburban rail services.

New renders of the new interchange station in Casco Viejo (Old Town). Here will meet the Lines 1, 2 and upcoming line 3 of the Metro Bilbao as well as the regional trains coming from Bermeo, Gernika, Eibar and Donostia:

The works are currently undergoing and are expected to finish next year.

Casco Viejo station (L1, L2 & L3)

The new hall of Casco Viejo station is in a very advanced stage of construction. It's supposed to open on April the 1st together with the rest of new line 3 (Matiko - Etxebarri Norte).

It's a rather impressive structure in the middle of the old town, which will be a good shelter in rainy days. The left part of the hall will host a customer office managed by both Metro Bilbao (lines 1 & 2) and Euskotren (line 3).

Some pictures from this week (all credits to igaribi), originally posted in Euskoscrapers:

Line 3 of Metro Bilbao will open on the 8th of April.

Quote:
La línea 3 de Metro Bilbao se inaugurará el 8 de abril

15/03/2017

Ofrecerá conexiones cada 7,5 minutos entre Etxebarri y Matiko. El presupuesto de las obras asciende a los 279 millones de euros.

Map of the line:

Source: http://www.elcorreo.com/bizkaia/2017...313171919.html

It has some mistakes, given that "San Antonio de Etxebarri" station will be finally called "Kukullaga", and it doesn't show the other Euskotren lines which will also use Line 3 tracks (from Matiko towards Lezama and from Kukullaga towards Bermeo and Donostia).

The line 3 of Metro Bilbao opens next Saturday, it will be operated by Euskotren (Basque Railways) instead of Metro Bilbao SA which operates the other two lines, that's a first for the Bilbao metro network so we'll see how good (or bad) it ends up being.

Since last Monday, all Euskotren services on the E1 line (Bilbao - Durango - Donostia/San Sebastián) have started using the new L3 tunnel, meaning they no longer use the surface section between Kukullaga and Atxuri stations (which is still used by E4 services to Bermeo) but the new underground alignment between Kukullaga and Matiko via Casco Viejo station, shared with L3 metro services (Kukullaga - Matiko) and E3 train services (Kukullaga - Lezama).

In the future E4 services will be also transferred to the L3 tunnel and the surface alignment between Atxuri and Kukullaga will be turned into a tram line.

Map of Euskotren, Metro Bilbao, tram and funicular lines in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa provinces (without the new changes):

What's happening with that old Lezama-Lutxana EuskoTren line? Is that being converted to metro or kept as is?
