Mike Lazaridis

Michael Lazaridis (born 1961, Istanbul, Turkey) is the founder and co-CEO of Research In Motion (RIM). He is also the chancellor of the University of Waterloo, the university he dropped out of very shortly before graduation.

Early life and education

His Greek parents moved from Turkey to Windsor, Ontario in 1966. In 1980, he enrolled at the University of Waterloo. He dropped out in 1985 shortly before graduation, having been offered a lucrative contract from General Motors for the nascent RIM.

He is married to Ophelia Lazaridis. They have two children.

Philanthropic work

On October 23, 2000, Lazaridis founded the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics with $100 million of personal funds, along with $10 million contributions from fellow RIM executives Jim Balsillie and Doug Fregin.

On April 30, 2004, Lazaridis and his wife together donated $33.3 million to the University of Waterloo for its Institute for Quantum Computing.

Awards and accolades

He received an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from UW, and in June 2003 became its 8th chancellor. He was named Canada's Nation Builder of the Year for 2002 by readers of the Globe and Mail newspaper, and has received various other accolades as a result of his financial success and philanthropic efforts.

But his attention soon focused on his belief that media, communications, and computers would inevitably merge. That led him to create MIT's famous Media Lab, where so many of today's Internet and WWW technologies were developed. Georges Livanos was born in 1926 in New Orleans. His father, Stavros Livanos, was a great figure in Greek shipowning circles. During the World War II, Georges Livanos served in the American army in Japan.

In 1946, he received a degree in economics from the University of Athens. In 1949, he founded his own company, Ceres Hellenic Shipping. Shortly after, he inherited his father's fleet of 30 ships, including the world's five largest supertankers.

Although rivals in business, the Greek shipowning families had close personal ties through the marriages of Georges Livanos' sisters. Eugenia Livanos married a competitor, Stavros Niarchos, and her sister Tina married Aristotle Onassis. After Eugenia's death, Tina divorced and remarried Stavros Niarchos, Aristotle Onassis' lifelong rival.

Georges Livanos managed his naval empire from Lausanne. With over 100 ships, his fleet was the largest merchant navy in Greece. He also created a shipping company between the Greek Isles and was involved in the protection of ocean and coastal waters. In 1994, his fortune was an estimated 3 billion dollars.

The Greek shipowner then diversified his activity and invested in real estate, as well as in the banking industry with Basil Goulandris, another Greek shipowner also based in Lausanne. Georges Livanos passed away in 1997, leaving his business to his son, Peter Livanos.
