HONG KONG - a quick glimpse of China's very special city

Normally Hong Kong is one of the main destinations for most travellers but this time it was just a quick stopover on my way to the nearby Shenzhen where I spent one week.

I came to Hong Kong from Bangkok on an early morning flight and only managed to go as far as my hotel room before dropping into bed and 'disconnecting' for the rest of the day. Fortunately I did manage to get up at some point in the evening and take some photos of what is undoubtedly one of world's most fascinating cities.

This is the view of Hong Kong that everyone knows. It may well be one of the most fascinating night views in the world. I can't believe it was 6 years since I last went to HK! It felt so good to be back even if for a very brief stay

One of the amazing features of Hong Kong's urban fabric is building highrises on the hills. It just looks so crazy

I have a Canon 500D camera and a 70-300mm Sigma lens along with Sigma 10-20mm. Those are cheap/entry level ones if the names don't say much.

But yes, I would love to try some more sophisticated equipment. Hong Kong is a great place to take photos of any kind in any weather conditions.

Continued

Continued with Hong Kong photos

Highrise apartments in HK Island. There are many spots in Hong Kong where even ordinary apartment towers are a sight in itself due to their location (right next to very steep hills) and shape (very 'slim' and tall). Quite a unique urban landscape and some extreme solutions in order to utilize land without compromising the surrounding nature. There are some similar sights in Shenzhen but nowhere near the extent as it is in HK

Oh how I'd love to go there...Out of all Asian cities Hong Kong is the one that attracts me the most. The mountains, the architecture, the urbanity and the street life. All good stuff.

Fantastic shots.

Stonecutters Bridge seen in a distance (about 4.5km away). Bridge opened in 2009. Hong Kong has some truly epic infrastructure: Cable/Suspension bridges, island airport on a mostly reclaimed land, tunnels, urban highways, U/C express railway link and station. All built or U/C in especially challenging conditions due to natural landscape of Hong Kong. Given the size of the city it's certainly one of the most exciting places on earth for getting to see some of the best transport infrastructure anywhere in the world

The last installment of photos are from the famous Chungking Mansions. It is a block of mixed-use properties which represent the Hong Kong of perhaps 1970's or so. This place is located in a prime location in Tsim Sha Tsui where land prices are probably sky high. Yet despite that it's still intact and is a functional residential/hotel/commercial complex. There is a number of cheap guesthouses where travellers can stay for as low as HK$120 (11 EUR) in a dedicated 'private room' which would be literally enough to accommodate a single bed and a tiny shower room in addition to the space to open the doors. It's quite an amazing experience and really makes think on how efficient the space and land use is in Hong Kong where in some cases literally every centimeter of space is considered and put into actual use

There is a HK movie named Chungking Express by renouwned HK director Wong Kar Wai starring Faye Wong and Tony Leung which is largely filmed at Chungking Mansions. It's one of my favorite movies

It looks a little creepy when looking at inner 'yards' of the complex but in reality it's just a normal building except that spaces are tight

Common areas. Everything is clean and tidy. Only problem I experience is inadequate elevator service. You may need to wait for one for quite a while. Therefore it's a good idea to think about using stairs. I was staying on the 10th floor and went up and down using the stairs which was interesting too
