I think that the name results from the old sign (disappeared ?) of the hotel representing these animals.

Yes, houses are contemporary with the abbey Cluny III (built between 1088 and 1130).
The monastic village has grown round the abbey from the 11th to the 14th centuries and counted 3000 inhabitants.
Altogether, some 200 medieval houses are still preserved in Cluny.
