I did, now what do I do?

Nice pics BTW. I can remember visiting Málaga in late 2009, when the system was still under construction. The bus ride from the airport to the hotel, near La Malagueta, took over an hour and showed many construction sites along the route. I bet the ride from the airport to La Malagueta by metro will be a lot shorter and more convenient once that opens.

The L2 of the metro won't go from the Airport to La Malagueta, just from Palacio de los Deportes to El Perchel (in a first phase) and to Guadalmedina (second phase). Then it will be extended northwards as a tram line to Hospital Civil. L1 will go from the University (Andalucía Tech station) to El Perchel, Guadalmedina and eventually Atarazanas. The old plans to bring the line to La Malagueta were abandoned earlier this year due to their cost.

Anyway, if you ever go to Málaga again, you can take the Cercanías (commuter train) C-1 line from the Airport station to Málaga centro - Alameda station. There is a train every 20 minutes and it is a short trip.

During the test runs, Telecom got to take some pictures of El Perchel station.
This is the most important one of the network, since not only it will have a link here with the Málaga-María Zambrano railway station, for high speed rail (AVE), regional rail (Renfe MD), and commuter rail (Cercanías Renfe), as well as the main bus station; but it will also be the link between lines 1 and 2.

Here are two pics of the hall, around the fare barriers, behind the canvas there´s the access for the bus station:

Map and scheme of the Metro-tram network in Malaga

I guess it won´t take very long to open, although there´s no date yet...

Note that both the map and scheme have some mistakes:

1) the scheme correctly shows Universidad stop as surface, the map wrongly shows it as underground.

2) both the scheme and map incorrectly show a "common section" between El Perchel-María Zambrano and Atarazanas as open.

Not only is that incorrect but:

-the true common section will only be between El Perchel-María Zambrano and Guadalmedina (not to be mistaken with the Malaga-Centro-Alameda Cercanías Renfe station, which used to be called like that in the past). It is under construction, but far from being finished.

-between Guadalmedina and Atarazanas only L1 (red) will run, as a metro (underground). But works have not started yet.

-between Guadalmedina and Hospital Civil, only L2 (blue) will run, as a tramway (surface). Works haven´t started either, since this is a more recent project. The map correctly shows it in dashed blue line.

3) L1 (red) will run only between Andalucia Tech and El Perchel-María Zambrano.

4) L2 (blue) will run only between Palacio de los Deportes and El Perchel-María Zambrano.

The signalling control room. On the map, it actually means the depot.

Last update, from February 11, 2014.

Images of the construction works of Guadalmedina stop, which will open after the other stations and stops on lines 1 and 2.
Like at El Perchel-Maria Zambrano, it will be common for both lines:

News:

According to this article (in Spanish), the sections Andalucía Tech-El Perchel (on L1) and Palacio de los Deportes-El Perchel (on L2) could open by late June/early July.

Further extensions from El Perchel to Hospital Civil (on L2) and from El Perchel to Atarazanas (on L1) should be opening by late 2017.

That is, if everything goes ok.

About time!

Planned extensions of lines 1 and 2.

Line 2 would be extended on surface towards Hospital Civil.
Line 1 would be extended underground towards Atarazanas (under the Alameda boulevard, the very centre of Malaga).

Me, I have a doubt. To the airport, or to San Julian station?

By extending L2 to San Julian, you serve better that quarter, you connect L2 to the Cercanías at a point closer to Torremolinos (if you travel southbound), and by changing at San Julian to Cercanías but northbound, to the Airport, too.

I suspect that taking it to San Julian would make it easier to extend it towards Churriana.

But I reckon it will still take a long time before they start planning that, if they ever do. On the other hand, traveling from central Malaga to the Airport will always be shorter (and just about as frequent) using the Cercanías.

The extension that seems to be more likely though, aside from the ones planned or under construction, would be L1 to the PTA and maybe Campanillas.
