These images are from some test run, much before yesterday.
Don´t you think for a second that in the Costa del Sol people are wearing long sleeves by this time of year...

The brand new Malaga metro has seen 330,000 passengers in its first month of operation.

Not bad, considering that the line doesn't reach the city centre yet.

When will the shared part of the "Y" be opened, realistically?

The system will soon complete one year.

What is the general perception about it (forumers, media, polls in MAlaga etc)? Is ridership below or above target?

2017? The next station to open will be Guadalmedina.

More or less on target.

Málaga Metro

Works on the 2 sections that compose the shared part of the metro "Y" are currently in a very different situation:

- El Perchel - Guadalmedina: works were suspended a year ago due to disputes between the contractor and Andalusia's regional government. The contract was terminated and now the government has to tender it again. So completion of this section is of course delayed to at least 2018 or 2019.

- Guadalmedina - Atarazanas: works were started earlier this year. A bridge on the Guadalmedina river is currently being demolished to leave room for the construction of the metro tunnel. Once the tunnel is completed, the bridge will be rebuilt. Works on the Atarazanas station have also started.

The opening of the second section depends entirely on the completion of the previous one, so I guess we won't see any new extension of the Málaga metro before 2019.

Some pictures of the works on the second section (cross-posting from the Spanish forum):

Malaga doesn't only have the tram/metro system, but also two Cercanías Renfe commuter train lines.

Both lines use the same class 464 4-car Civia trains.

Line C1

It runs from Malaga-Centro-Alameda station to the Malaga airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola.
It runs every 20 minutes, and it's one of the busiest commuter train lines in Spain, probably the busiest outside Madrid and Barcelona.
Locals (and tourists) constantly claim for it to be extended towards Mijas, Marbella and Estepona (or even beyond towards Algeciras), and this is something that would greatly relieve the roads and motorways in the area if it became a reality.

For now, studies upon studies upon studies... but no real plan.

Line C2

It runs from Malaga inland towards Cártama, Pizarra and Álora.
It is a much less busy line, and it has a much more irregular timetable, and one train every hour at best.

The following images are all from line C1.
Three stations on this line have been upgraded recently.
Some of these images were taken during the works, others weren't.
The upgrades have consisted mostly in new platform edges, and lifts.

The new access to El Perchel metro station (L1 & L2) from inside Málaga María Zambrano train station opened last week.

Until now both stations weren't directly connected, it was necessary to leave the train station building and cross one street to reach the closest entrance to the metro station.

By the way, they should do something with the names of both stations; it doesn't make sense at all that the metro and rail stations have different names.

Some pictures:
