Some war damage remains on buildings only a few feet from the brand new, 21st century modern government buildings.

Not only was Berlin one of the most beautiful collections of baroque, rococo, deco, and Grunderzeit buildings, it was preeminent in its modern designs of the early 20th century, which were very different than the communist blocks of post 1945 design. This example survived the war not far from Potsdammer Platz.

Victory Column - "Siegessäule"

Designed by Heinrich Strack, after 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War, by the time it was inaugurated on 2 September 1873, Prussia had also defeated Austria in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), giving the statue a new purpose.

Heiner Geissler from the "CDU"-Party called this monument "Prussian Trash" and he would like to see this monument demolished cause of the nationalistic history it tells...

The trash that should be demolished in the area is the obscene Soviet monument, featuring tanks and military might, located down the street. It's commonly accepted to have memorials and monuments to commemorate national events. It is not common, or even accepted, to maintain the memory of a vicious conqueror.

Couldn't disagree more. It's an eyesore and offensive element to the German capital. Everyone I know who visits finds it totally inappropriate.

Why it is an eyesore? Cause it is an Russian Memorial?

I think most people dont associate with the Victory Clumn first Prussia, but rather the Loveparade or the most popular Queer-Magazin in the city with the same name...

The Bundesrepublik is committed to maintain soviet memorials and cemeteries in Germany by contract. The memorial at the Straße des 17. Juni is a cemetery too.

It's an eyesore because it wreaks of militarism and subjugation. Germany as a nation has shown the world 65 years of exemplary non-aggressive, humanitarian, generous, and peaceful coexistence. Tanks and military symbolism that herald the opposite characteristics are indeed an eyesore; more specifically an offensive visual. The Soviet invasion of Berlin and its associated rampage of terror is material for museums; not to be thrust in the faces of a peace loving nation and their welcomed guests as an event to honor. The Loveparade is the polar opposite of this blight-on-the-landscape, and it sends the wrong message to current and future generations. My opinion, of course.

The Soviet Memorial is history and actually a great attraction. They should lose the tanks and other military weapons "adorning" it though. Those are really kitschy and offensive.

Thank you, agree. The militaristic aspects are indeed offensive, and should also offend today's Russia as an example of Stalinist oppression. Nazi imagery is history, too, and Germany is progressive and smart enough to not display Panzers and Messerschmitts in the front yard of the Reichstag.

A simple and tasteful memorial/cemetery on the location is more than sufficient.

Actually I think the weaponry and the tank are an impressive sight of a (hopefully) gone era. They should be preserved for what they are: a stupidity, a result of global aggression. Something to learn from. That's why we also don't tear down remnants of the Berlin wall or Stasi and Nazi facilities, it's breathing history and documents the failures of the 20th century. So we won't forget about them, ever.

I totally agree with Erbse in this point. I think it should be saved for future generations. Siegessäule, Soviet Memorial etc. also can be understud as memorial versus agression and war of the past.

Surely you can understand why Germans would want to demolish such a thing.

Personally, I find it aesthetically pleasing. It is not a badly constructed monument, however it is still a relic from the brutalization of Berlin by the Soviets.
