Memorials and commemoratives are important parts of any culture and valued in their ability to remember past glories as well as dark periods. Germany has struggled more than any other nation since 1945 (Japan may be comparable) to learn from the past and has set a commendable path for the future--one that the rest of the world would be served well to mimic. Old fashioned means of learning, such as putting a child's hand on a hot stove to show it's dangerous, or having tanks on display on the main avenue, seem overtly of a timeframe from which we should have evolved.

One must also remember the circumstances of this structure's erection. While the city was still smoldering in ruins, scattered bodies of civilians still barely cold from being slaughtered, skeletons of human life searching for food and a cave amongst the ruins in which to live, the occupying force chose to use their resources to construct this. It was built as a symbol of hate and subjugation; nothing positive. To maintain it as it was built is a slap in the face of Germany and peace loving peoples worldwide. To reinvent the area as a symbol of peace, memory, and tolerance would be an effort of humanitarian value that would be a better pathway to learning and understanding the history. The tanks and conquering giant need to go; the area renewed by flowers, trees, plaques, and thoughtful images that evoke tranquility.

Markers for streets as well as pre-GPS location finders were thoughtfully and architecturally designed to meet the pleasing aesthetics. This mileage marker shows the distance from city center to very near the Charlottenburg Palace.

Kaiser Wilhelm Platz in the Schoeneberg area had many buildings escape the bombs of WWII. One can roam this area and feel he is experiencing days gone by with Wilhemine architecture in all directions of sight.

Some architects attempt to artfully maintain the classic/historical appearance with a contemporary embellishment as we see here. The lower floors survived destruction but the upper stories are new.

However, this abomination of infusing modernist, utilitarian designs as extensions of the classic architecture of the Technical Institute is like putting marshmellows on a filet mignon. Yuk.

It's an eyesore because it's a monument to evil. Why celebrate the murders of tens of thousands and the rape of hundreds of thousands?

The St.Thomas Kirche (church) located in Kreuzberg at Mariannenplatz.
The church was designed by Friedrich Adler, a disciple of Friedrich August Stühler.
It was once the largest church in Berlin with one of the biggest congregation in western christianity.

Fantastic church and structure. Was this building damaged in the war and repaired so perfectly?

Indeed an amazing building.

It was damaged by a bombing in 1942 and got rebuilt in original.
But the interior got fully lost during bombing and its reconstruction in 1956.

The inside of St. Thomas has been reconstructed, but the painting (or lack of paintig) of the walls and ceiling as well as the furnishing of the church are mostly modern and very austere.

Luckily nothing one couldn't fix.
