Former Stettiner Vorortbahnhof, part of the larger Stettiner Bahnhof and renamed to "Nordbahnhof" by the communists in 1950s.

I googled Stettiner Bahnhof and I found it:

I can't identify this part remaining. So they should have rebuilt more of it, it was a beautiful building.

Berlin old town development next to the Palace - join the official discussion!

Redevelopment of Berlin's historical core / old town area
(Marx-Engels-Forum, Marienviertel, Molkenmarkt)

Until 18 May 2015, you can participate in the online discussion of the Berlin Senate!

http://stadtdebatte.berlin.de/

The site is in German, but comments in English are perfectly fine.

At this thread, the historical context and the urbanisation of the area is discussed (pro/contra reconstructions,
how to deal with the GDR fragments and the history of Berlin's historical core in general, etc.):
http://stadtdebatte.berlin.de/dialog...chte-des-ortes

Don't hesitate to join the discussion, it'll definitely get noticed by planners and the Berlin government!
I think it's all self-explanatory (or can be translated via Google etc.), but if you need some help, ping me.

Wow. I just love old pictures of Berlin. Reminds me so much of London before WW2.

Both grand and intimate.

I'm not sure if this will be the right thread but here are some pictures I found interesting nothing very special though. Reuter's photographer Fabrizio Bensch found some pics of Berlin made by Red Army photographer Georgy Samsonov in 1945 and using sorted resources ho found the same places nowadays. He managed to find the same camera used then - soviet FED, similar to Leica II

I think this picture is easy to recon - former Reichstag, present Bundestag

Reichstag rooftop

Near Reichstag

Bundestag?

Interesting. I see the horse on the Reichtag roof is missing today. Anyone know where it has gone?

Thats not the only missing figure or detail. It was either stolen or destroyed during "restauration" in the 50s and 60s. Infact, the Reichstag was still in pretty good shape considering what happened with it. Especially the stone-made interieur (the wooden assembly room burned out completely in 1933).

All gone now.

Wow, beautiful pictures of the "Großer Stern" (Grand Star) in spring. They beautifully restored it including the surrounding park and monuments in recent months. (No picture of Moltke? )

Lol, I can't get over how wonderfully offensive the Bismarck monument actually is for anyone, who understands it's symbolism: Bismarck looking to the West and grabbing his saber, Siegfried forging a big ass sword, Germania stepping on the defeated lion (France) and Atlas holding the whole world in his hands.

Großer Stern definitely is one of the best "national forums" in the world, truly a grand, epic and heroic feeling place.

I love modern culture and old architecture. I would love for Berlin to reconstruct as much as possible. It would turn the city into one of the most exciting capitals in the world.

Was this a complete tear down and rebuild? Or was the new facade added along with the top floor to the existing structure?

Judging by the streetlevel zone, I'd say the facade was applied on the original structure.

You can tell by looking at the ground level pillars - they are the same.

The new facade is on the same plane as the building next to it; and that plane was the same for the old facade. Meaning that the renovators only had to restore the existing stucco, install new window moldings and frames, new balconies, paint, and voila...a rebirth. Obviously a bit more goes into a renovation, but this could be done for thousands of structures that look just like this one easily and at reasonable costs.

The first picture..., where is this?

The "Bundesfinanzministerium" is also part of classical architecture?
