It is. Especially new Fabryczna Station - scale of this project is huge, this is gonna be the most functional train station in Poland and one of the biggest in central Europe. Also part of the future High-speed rail.
Many people consider this investment (and new highways sorrounding the city) as a beginning of new era for the city. With our central position in the country and new infrastructure, Łódź will now be a real competitor for Warsaw, Poznań, Wrocław.

Thanks! And yes, we've got a lot of old factories, I think that maybe even more than Manchester. Some of them are already adapted, some are waiting for better times, hopefully It'll come.

Yes, It is. And I also wandered why they will leave It's facade as it is. Maybe as a part of the factory complex that was restored by them earlier it's protected by law?

Great projects, thanks dexter2 for your effort, I'm glad to see that Łódź is catching up with other big cities in Poland .

Two examples to show the great level of revitalisation in this city:

The Manufaktura Shopping Center:

Once this was the textile factory of Izrael Poznanski, now it is one of the biggest shopping centers in Europe, opened since 2006:

Lofts on Tymienieckiego street:

I was in August in Lodz after not being there for 3 or 4 years. I was amazed how many things have changed. There is still much work to do, but things are going in the good direction .

Gotta love these red brick industrial buildings. In certain countries these would be simply demolished and replaced by something brand new. Not in Lodz tho, they respect their history and heritage. Inspiring

I and a bunch of Canadians spent a glorious couple of days in Lodz. Lots needs to be done still, but Manufaktura as a shopping and entertainment/cultural centre knocked our socks off. Never seen anything like this, amazing!

How would sum up the city as a whole? How long is the commute from Warsaw?

Loving those industrial conversions. Fantastic.

It would be great if you could give us estimated completion dates and the rough location of the projects.

full of potential, generally run down though, it would be nice if the young people who left after 2004 came back and invested in this amazing historic relic. It's a couple of hours from Warsaw by train, will be faster by car by end of next year when A1 through Lodz is complete.

It is run down because it was totally neglected and forgotten after 1989, governments treated this city like some black sheep, unfortunately it led to the bad image and negative stereotypes about this city, but you can see in recent years that sth positive is going on.
Łódź still has a long way to catch up with other big Polish cities, but the worst period is obviously over, still, dealing with these stereotypes will be challenging.

You are all right. But unfortunetely, next to run-down buildings the biggest problem of the city are people. There is a lot of poor people without jobs in the city centre. They were usually working in now closed factories and are without jobs. This situation is now touching second and third generation (beginning of ghettos) and is causing social problems on street like agression, etc.
This city needs complex - social and material - program of urban renewal.

And the first step was recently done. Our prime minister Tusk announced that Łódź will lead polish program of cities renewal financed mostly by UE. Funds are big - 25bln PLN (more than 5bln EURO) plus government funds. I suspect Łódź will get something like 1bln EURO for this task. That's a lot of money and that is actually the last chance and last call for those totally neglected old buildings.

Typical negected street in Łódź City Centre: https://www.google.pl/maps?q=W%C3%B3...50.23,,0,-1.47

Great news, I've never heard about this program. Łódź has more old buildings and in much worse shape than Kraków, so I hope it would get the most money for this renewal.

This is old N. Eitingon factory that was built in 1928 in bauhaus style. It is one of the first buildings in Poland that has reinforced concrete structure.
You can rent offices there now.
