I think these people are more concerned with the skyline than the actual building itself.

The Shadow fearers incognito. lol.

Oh no! How dare they ruin our skyline by demolishing an ugly - mostly faceless building and replace it with what could possibly a be a very luxurious and intricate tower with a top quality design!

Ugly buildings can be landmarks, too. Though in this case I agree with the decision made.

I was inspired by Hudson11's beautiful 1 Vandy for the WTC site posted over at the Vanderbilt thread, I'd thought I'd play architect and depict the Park Lane tower at aprox 850'.

I just realized, this tower is taller than Bob Sterns 520' Park Avenue. Not bad especially being directly in front of the Park. Cheers.

Note: image shown for massing purpose only

Does the height look about right??

Are there any other NYC skyscrapers with rounded-corner rectangular windows?
If not, then we shouldn't be so quick to celebrate this demolition

Park lane is still nothing special and something more deserving needs to takes its place considering its location.. Heck even the creator, the architect agrees it's not worthy to be saved.

Plus there is another tower planned that kinda looks like it.

1150 Ave of the Americas

Wow, that's almost an exact rebuild.
Go ahead with the demo then.

ThatOneGuy: I completely understand what you mean, however I find the current building, although has certain credible architectural features; it just hasn't pulled them off well imo

But damn! That Ave of the Americas proposal looks great! Just some slight tweeks from this current building, and it looks perfect, vertical lines, indentations, nice black glass contrasting with the light facade, a slightly finned crown and the base looks great! The square windows definitely work, and it has set backs - lovely

Do we have a thread for that by any chance?

Also, Avenue of the Americas was one of my favourite streets in New York, was just so impressive and very grand!

First Look: 36 Central Park South, Park Lane Hotel Redevelopment
http://newyorkyimby.com/2014/10/firs...velopment.html

Quote:
The imminent redevelopment of the Park Lane Hotel at 36 Central Park South has become one of the most talked about projects in real estate over the last few weeks, as reports emerged of a frivolous battle to preserve the original structure as a landmark. Now, YIMBY has obtained the first renderings of what the replacement may look like, though the images likely do not depict a final product...

Yimby's the man, but I guarantee that 36CPS will look nothing like that.

Even more so than 220 CPS, this site has the potential to be the most expensive tower in NY, as its location is better given the proximity to 5th Ave.

Also, it is truly inconceivable that Witkoff would give a project of this magnitude to a hack like Spivak, who's barely better than Kaufman.

I expect something like a hyper-opulent Stern tower.

I hope (and believe) you are right, LL. That is truly putrid. Reminiscent of The Hyatt next to Grand Central.

I am right. That's basically the same "massing model" we've already seen which is indicative of nothing other than the possible height. Remember this which was shown at the "landmark" hearings?

It appears to be a more updated massing model, as the rear of the tower towards the top is setback via a few steps...

But the design is a bit bland, but it is a massing model

Here's a quick mockup of what could e done with the tower, it's simple, and inspired by the Steinway Tower, but anyways:

It's an upgrade over the nondescript Park Lane Hotel but the developer had indicated he wanted something truly great befitting the location just off Central Park. Great this isn't, imaginative this isn't. Better be a massing model, had also expected a lot more praiseworthy and bold.

If Yimby's assessment is correct that this will be a renovation and addition, rather than a teardown, I am truly disappointed. We'll most likely just get an all-glass reclad with a handful of additional floors. Here's hoping they come to their senses on this and try for something bold, befitting the site.
