Sale of far West Side McDonald's paves way for yet another Hudson Yards tower

http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article...another-hudson

Quote:
The Related Cos. has acquired a McDonald's on the far West Side of Manhattan, paving the way for a mega-tower or a pair of super-tall skyscrapers at Hudson Yards.

McDonald's is closing its location at the corner of West 34th Street and 10th Avenue. Related is purchasing the site from the restaurant chain, which has owned it for decades, for an undisclosed sum. McDonald's filed a notice with the state at the end of September announcing that it plans to lay off all 65 employees at the location by the end of the year.

A person who answered the phone at the McDonald's location but was not authorized to speak publicly said the company is looking for another location in the area.

The fast-food restaurant's corner lot is the final parcel the developer needed to build a mixed-use development of up to 3.3 million square feet. Related has spent about $200 million ovduring the past seven years acquiring all the other properties on the block bounded by 10th Avenue, the newly created Hudson Boulevard, and West 33rd and 34th streets. Related refers to the site as 50 Hudson Yards and has yet to release formal designs for what it wants to build there. Tentatively, however, the company has plans for two towers that could each soar more than 1,000 feet.

Meanwhile, Related on Wednesday plans to top out the first tower it is developing, at 10 Hudson Yards, a 700-foot-tall spire that is anchored by handbag purveyor Coach. Related is also in the process of building a 1 million-square-foot mall along 10th Avenue, which will be anchored by the department store Neiman Marcus, and 30 Hudson Yards, a nearly 1,300-foot tower that will be home to Time Warner and across the street from the upcoming 50 Hudson Yards. When complete, an 11.2 million-square-foot complex that includes office, residential, retail, hotel, cultural and public space will sit on the eastern rail yards.

On the western rail yards, the developer is planning to start construction on a development that will consist of more than 6 million square feet of office and residential space.

another pair of supertall twins in addition to Manhattan West's office towers would be incredible.

The McDonalds site is the site for 50 Hudson Yards.

Ohhhhhhh. I thought that Related already owned the 50 HY site and McD's was adjacent.

Still, exciting news about the potential super tall twins no doubt. Although I would prefer one mega tower over two of similar heights to the other HY buildings.

Edit: Jesus, I guess it's been a long time since I've looked at this thread; that (ugly) two-towers concept has been around for a long time, and I swear I knew that McD's was part of the 50 HY site back in the day... There are just so many developments to track in NYC, it's crazy to think that one can just forget the details of a project of this scale. And that's without mentioning Tishman's site!

Nice! But 10 HY is 895 ft tall, not 700 ft tall...unless Related again decided it just wanted to surprise us, lol!

I do think a megatower would be preferable to two of 1,000-1,250 ft. height.... either way though HY along with the whole area around it with all including the Tishman new site is going to be rocking to close out the decade....in 2020, looking over that same area as compared to now... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's helping me is that I'm selective about what I follow. Don't like the billionaire's needles so I focus on Downtown and HY area.

Actually prior to a certain permanent ban I almost lost interest in NYC threads entirely and only now begin to rediscover a lot of projects.

this is not the final design. The design for the site is still in the planning phase.

I'm actually cool with that design as it is. It looks like two separate buildings, which just makes the cluster look more dense! And it's not just flat blue glass, either! The two main towers have enough of that.

Recent Photos Show Hudson Yards Taking Shape

Quote:
Bordered by 10th Avenue, 11th Avenue, West 30th Street, and West 34th Street, the Eastern Yard is currently a web of cranes and steel. Recent photos depict the mesmerizing scene at the site of phase one, with nearly all of its buildings now under construction.

It is most certainly closed.

Pretty soon, the most out-of-place building in Manhattan will become the foundation for a 1000 foot tower.
