Silverstein was so incompentant getting 7WTC started just months after 9/11. His company finished it 4 years later with zero tenants signed. But he still leased it up just a few years later despite all the naysayers.

Yeah and the firefighter deaths at the Deutshe Bank Building demo was on him of course. All the delays at starting 1WTC, the museum, the transportation hub, the plaza, etc. All on him, right?

All that remains for him is 2WTC. So that one missing tower makes him a failure?

Sorry I can't let this go. But Silverstein has been incredible in rebuilding the WTC.

If anyone has anything substantial to add why leasing at a terrorist attack site is similar to the HY I'm all ears.

Once 2 WTC is done, I think the city should co-name that stretch of Greenwich St, to Silverstein Row or something like that. As Larry Silverstein has said in interviews, he could have just retired after 9/11 and let someone else run his company and deal with rebuilding the WTC, but as a New Yorker he felt he had to. He deserves a lot of praise.

It's hard to praise either side of the Silverstein vs PANYNJ bickering, it hurt the public image of both. In the end it's likely true that Silverstein really wanted the WTC to be rebuilt and worked hard on it, and likely the same is true for the Port Authority, and they were just bickering over details. In the end it won't matter because at some point in the future we'll have all towers standing and filled with people and everyone will be happy and forget about the drama and praise everyone involved for it all ending well.

It seems Stephen Ross' description of this as a "stone and glass" tower were fairly overstated -- per the new renders on the Hudson Yards Site, this tower is going to be very glassy.

I wasn't expecting anything particularly showy, especially given what we knew about the dimensions: given the height and square footage, and the financial tenant in need of big floorplates, this was pretty much always going to be a relatively standard box. Since I'm the guy who's always worried about too many clashing geometries at street level in HY, I suppose a little staid and unobtrusive is good. The setbacks are well proportioned and I'm interested in getting a better detailed look at the crown and (presumably) its lighting scheme.

What do you guys think?

It looks like a bigger, glassier version of Foster's 551 West 21st in Chelsea, and the materials used there were top-notch (see below). If he gets to use the same materials here, this will be a very handsome and sophisticated building ...although I admit that the building could look even better with some gold accents like the Chelsea building to add more warmth and some drama. Overall all I like it as is, however.

An upgrade over the previous design, but still kinda meh.

Conservative classic office tower design, simple and timeless. And once they build a Gehry tower in the Western Yards people are going to be thankful for this to balance it out.

But it's practically a redo of the very first design, we saw...

Yes, and an upgrade like he said. Fosterised and much more elegant.

I thought he was referencing the "Wedding Cake?"
That was the 'previous' version we knew of.

I adore the new design, I prefer it much more than the previous design (which by the way reminds me of BIG's tacky stuff).

Well, as with the Phase II placeholders, both of those previous mock-ups were probably designed by interns! I should hope the final product produced by a veteran architecture firm would be better.

That "previous version" looks like BIG's WTC2 tuned upside down

Five years from now, high in the Beehive looking out over Hudson Yards, I have a feeling that I'll hear tourists saying something like this about this building:

"What do you think about that one?"
"Which one?"
"The tall one with squares and glass."
"They all look like that."
"No, you know... the one with the elegant square top and shiny windows."
"You'd have to point it out."
"There, right there, I'm pointing right at it. That one."
"I still don't see it."
"Ugh, never-mind, let's just go to Times Square."

...

It's handsome and clean but underwhelming, and I suppose maybe that's okay for this site. It reminds me of the US Bancorp Center in Minneapolis (just twice the height and with glassier cladding) - which provides solid filler for the Minneapolis skyline, much as this building will do standing among the other giants in the Yard... even if it is nearly 1,000 feet.

from: http://www.piedmontreit.com/properti...ancorp-center/

I kinda wish 50 Hudson yards would bring Gargoyles back and really be something to talk about.

Thanks to everyone posting renderings and information as it's updated.

I like it's simplicity but the setbacks and the top are a plus.
33rd St is quite narrow there though, this will make a very deep canyon with 30 HY.
