Something about these P/H towers in the south loop....and not something good I'm afraid. They all seem so soulless and manufactured compared to the Lakeshore East towers. Even this one is kind of becoming a "poser" if you ask me.

They seem to lack a certain level of 'authenticity' that SCB, DeStefano, Booth/Hansen and SOM buildings all seem to inherently possess. I think it's probably because those other firms have a long, rich track record at doing this building type.

I was walking down Michign Avenue yesterday with my daughter and while I can recognize the need for the 'south wall' of Grant Park to be created, I really wish the developers and maybe the city could have found an architect or perhaps different architects to construct that wall, not just giving it blindly to P/H because they meet some developer's bottom line.

I couldn't disagree with you more. With the exception of Aqua by Gang, I haven’t seen a building that compares to OMP or OMPW. Even Tower 4 and Sky 55 kick Lakeshores but. Have we comfirmed that 2MP and 2MPW are going to be designed by P/H. Ive never seen anything on that.

I know to each his own but I tend to think that your opinion is in the minority.

Sky55 IS an SCB building....

The developers aren't bluntly handing projects to P/H, at least not the signature ones, so cool your jets.

...yeah, and there's another one or two down there that are from Legacy Development and not Enterprise Development that P/H hasn't done too, but what's your point?

Mine wasn't to condemn an architect as much as to question giving such a significant and long-awaited architectural step in the progress of this city - that is framing the third wall of Grant Park - to essentially one firm.

Word is that P/H is also designing the 2 unannounced new towers between Indiana and Michigan fronting on Roosevelt St. To me, that's an architectural monopoly that I'd feel more comfortable trusting a more experienced firm with....or better yet, mixing it up with a few other firms to give it a true sense of diversity.

Could you imagine the outrage on these boards if only one firm had designed every building from Michigan AVe. all the way to Lakeshore Drive along Randolph Street? I'm talking about what creates the fabric of a city and in my opinion, it's heterogeneity.

The south wall is 2 blocks long - 4 buildings.

The north wall is 6 blocks long, with 9 buildings.

Even if P/H is doing the next 2 Museum Park buildings (which I didn't know), it seems like they've done quite a good job mixing it up so far. They are undoubtedly giving buildings to several designers on their staff, so I don't think heterogeneity will be a problem here.

On the contrary, it is a defined lack of vision that afflicts most large developments. While identical buildings is something to avoid at all costs, giving multiple buildings to the same firm (assuming that the firm embraces creative differences) ensures that the buildings will relate to each other and form a coherent cityscape, something that few architects working separately know how to accomplish anymore.
