Salisbury, the little city with a lot to offer

Hi there, SSC members!

I've decided to make a thread about my hometown of Salisbury, Wiltshire. A small country town of about 44,000, this city is much more than the sleepiness you'd expect.

We're home to the UK's tallest cathederal, the world's oldest working mechanical clock, one of only 4 Magna Cartas, and we did own a Prime-Minister! (although whether or not that is an achivement is debatable )

Anway, I have some pictures that I took today , and I'll try and give a commantary on them, as I know a little bit about some of the city

So, let's begin!

Here is the neighbourhood near me, and the first picture that I took. Old Harnham road is lined with old cottages, as well as middle class Victorian Homes.

At the end of this road (left at the lights) there is an arch bridge, built in 1730. Today it carries busses and a few cars during the rush hour, plus it also carries me on my commute to work aha

The bridge has beautiful views of the River Avon!

Historical buildings dominate this part of town. On the right is a hospital built in the 1300s :O

DSCF0617 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Off into the cathedral we go! Salisbury has 5 gates built in its historic walls

Here is the one on De Vaux Place

There she is! More than 750 years old, she hosts the tallest spire in the UK

DSCF0620 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Just look at the detail on the Facade!

DSCF0621 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Opposite this magnificance are some smashing Georgian Mansions

Since 1986, the building has been undergoing a massive, £ muti-million restoration to undo hundreds of years of water damage, pollution and general neglect. It's due to be finished wthin the next two years!

Here's one of the last remaining parts which are being restored

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0625 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

After getting bored with the cathedral, I stepped out on to the busy city streets! All the peace and quiet was just behind me

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0626 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

A picture of one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. Sorta looks like the White House too aha!

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0627 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Heading towards the action! To the left is Alexandria House, aka, the old law courts. Now an office building, before it was a courthouse, it was actually a nightclub (my parents told me of their times there)

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0628 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Ghastly, isn't it? Built in 1995 to serve the new mall behind it, this car park isn't lookng too good for its age!

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0629 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Directly opposite! Yes, there are the types of building destroyed to make way for it all

The street still has some historic gems to it!

Okay, time to show some revitalisation!

Here is the old pig market. Recently renovated this year, this small square was an old coach park with litter, garbage and broken pavement. There were potholes and it was uncomfortable to drive on. The road next to it was also repaved a few years ago

Another photo, showing the mix of buildings the city has to offer

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0635 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Even if not all of them are very attractive

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0636 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

This little building here... Is actually a multiplex Talk about a tardis.. It's HUGE on the inside

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0637 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

A magnificant building worthy of being a hotel!

DSCF0638 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

These little gems are in the middle of a shopping mall! The city is full of hidden treasures

We certianly like our traffic lights here

Aha, now we're getting urban! Built in 1973, the inner city ring road plows through the city. Carrying 4 lanes of city traffic, it's also one of the most congested roads in the city. Here's the bridge that rises high above Milford Street!

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0642 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

To liven it up, there are murals on either side of the road. They're on the junction of Rampart Road and Milford Street

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0643 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0644 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Mind you, you can get pretty good views from it!

Another architectual disaster! The city college. Built in 1961, it ain't pretty

image hosted on flickr

DSCF0649 by Kiwicoote95, on Flickr

Ahhh, but now we're with nature. Here's Churchill Gardens. Built in 1910 and greatly expanded in the 1960's it's among the cities' largest parks

Ewww... Look at this bridge! When was it built? 1965?, 1972?

Try 1933! That's right! Not everything pre war was pretty!

However, good views of the bridge we were on earlier!

The bridge on fisherton street.

An intresting peice. A bridge was built here in the 1860's, it was knocked down in 1921 and replaced with a new bridge. That bridge was subsequently knocked down in 1960 and replaced with the current bridge in 1961, which is also now due to be replaced again

The Malitings, an awfully hideous looking thing right in the middle of the city. This burnt down in the 1980's (which was good )

Yep... This is the rebuilt version

More ugly buildings. YUK!

And I'd thought I'd throw in an architectual gem, to help us all feel better.

Until the mid 80's, this was actually a KFC

I love Salisbury, its in need of some high quality public realm work and alot more pedestrianisation around the town center. I noticed that most of the archtiectural disasters of the 60's tend to be near the ring road and not really amongst the central historic areas, but it definately gives a confused identity to some areas of the city. Thanks for posting i will be checking back on this thread, but maybe pick a sunny day to take pics!!!!!

True. Some parts of the city look very run down. The office blocks I showed are to be demolish and replaced by a hotel, which I'm pleased with.

Sadly, some disasters have creeped into the historic core. I'll make sure I get a picture of the bright pink Victorian building mixed with a brown 60's office tower on Wednesday!
