What the actual f*ck is this hideously offensive sack of human excrement growing out of the roof of this structure!? They do realize that will have to be torn down in 30-40 years, correct? Just like all the similar modernist "additions" they did to historic structures in the 50's,60's and 70's. They were thought innovative at first and then as soon as people got past the "oh its nice, shiny and new" phase, they've started bulldozing them. Only the truly most pretentious of modernist architecture fans could possibly defend something so blatantly ill-conceived. Antwerp deserves better. Heck, the WORLD deserves better.

Well the architect should drop those pills. It is not good for him. What did he think... -why not put a yacht on top of that roof. No one has ever tried that before.

That building is quite far from the center and in a industrial unattractive area. So nobody is really worrying about that old building. I see it sometimes when I pass by in Antwerp and IMO it is a nice addition and make the building stand while you would not notice it otherwise.

As far as I am aware, that building was left to decay horribly, and the unique extension provided the funding to restore it. The cladding needed to be better. Zaha really wins when she uses sinuous white facades with ribbons of dark glass. Her High Line project in New York City is a great example of that.

Some random updates/photos about a few of the the many projects in the city.
Roughly, we can divide the city into 3 parts: the north, the center and the south. In the north and south, they are building antire 'new' city parts.

1. The North (Eilandje/Island docklands):

Port House (love it or hate it!) I love it

Antwerp Harbour House by Antwerp Photography, on Flickr

Westkaai

Cadiz

India Natie

Liberty (next to the Red Star Line Museum)

Kaai 37

Eiland

Campus Spoor Noord (school/university)

Towers in Park Spoor Noord

ZNA (hospital)

2. City center

'Dok Zuid', Antwerp's Central Park

Scheldekaaien (the entire riverfront alongside the city from north to south is being transformed from a car park into a multifunctional pedestrians area)

Antwerp Tower (renovation), close to the Central Station

...is going to look like...

3. South

Nice updates. Antwerp doesn't get much exposure on this forum.

The old stock exchange building was abandoned for years. It is now being renovated and it will become a 5-star Marriott hotel.

During the works walls were found dating from the Middle Ages. Also some Iron Age remains.

What moron let that go for so long. Some grand cathedrals are less beautiful. Thank God they are giving it a proper renovation and it has not really decayed much.

That's absolutely stunning. Loved Antwerp when I was there. The train station's got to be one of the best in the world.

It is one of the best. I love the "new" station but the old version was even more a touch from the golden Jugend era. A truly cathedral for the people.
