If I lived in this part of Shenzhen or go by the area frequently, I'd like to stop by and ask the workers "what are you building?" That's worked for me here in Austin when I was curious about a work site, and we have a lot of work sites going on in this boom town.

You don't necessarily need a hole. I can imagine this one doesn't need underground parking space because there will be a lot of space underneath Ping An.

I could bet the wouldn't waste precious floor area even they don't need car parking, they can have shopping mall, storage or mechanical floor there. Anyway the slab is way to thin and without reinforcing to be part of the building.. There will be no signs of preparation for another year.. they'll use this this plot for building material storage and dormitories most likely..

100% wrong, they used to have the dorms on this plot, then in November/December red Chinese banners appeared saying construction of south tower will start after December, then the dorms were removed and moved to another plot and construction started! They are probably going to do piling after covering the whole plot with the temporary concrete slab, then after 6-12 months start digging, then foundation pour, then rising, just like many other supertalls, I don't know if you've been following them for as long as me.

From what I've heard they are now required to cover the site with temporary slabs before piling to reduce dust.

Good to know, they had an announcement, looking forward then.. I've stuck to my point only because I've seen exactly the same think before (say here) and only few projects wasted time with the slab before digging.. probably only in high populated areas as hmmwv said to reduce dust..

Look like they prepare to construct the outer walls of the (future) pit.

That plot obviously needs filing up, but there is another one top left next to this one.

Two, actually. There's one with blue-roofed barracks right behind the one with the grey-roofed barracks. And in the second last picture (post #51) there's also an empty plot behind the residential buildings.
