Something so absurdly out of scale with everything around it better be a masterpiece. This is mediocrity.

And that's just the design. It's a luxury highrise surrounded by a sea of public housing that has zero chance of being redeveloped. It has terrible access to transit. Honestly, I don't know who thought this up.

Damn, that's a sweet view. Looks like it will be unobstructed for some time.

Well there's a whole bunch of towers around this planned; the design may be on the plainer side but I think it looks good up close.

It just looks out of place because of the scale of the buildings nearby. I do think it looks way better than the "Project" looking brick buildings around it.

It looks nice right there, like it´s trying to invite more towers to join ( more development ). The only thing that looks strange now is, how it dwarfs the bridges.

This building will not look as bad if the 3 or 4 other similarly sized towers are actually approved and not blocked by NIMBYs. An attempt at changing the zoning on the site, which was put forward 4 days ago, would limit the height to 350 feet, yet would still allow as many units, provided that 25% are affordable.

I'd put the over/under of pots of coffee brewed to come up with this "design" at 1.5

Probably the mediocracy in the photo are the giant swaths of brown-apartment complexes (the dorms, ha).. trust me in the future those pockets will look like Hudson Yard developments.. land in Manhattan will continue to climb in value and those buildings will be reincarnated into larger scale developments.. so just because it sticks out now and doesn't really fit the area..it will one day..

Those brown apartment complexes are mostly middle-class co-ops that house some of the last major middle class populations in Manhattan. Their design is from the tower in the park era, and they make the most of the greenery around them. I fully support no more tall buildings like this one in this area. This tower is completely out of place and shite mediocrity for the sake of Dubai-ish showmanship. It's a horrific piece of development in the city, and the tiny 13 story building that was constructed to accommodate the affordable housing portion is almost a complete slap in the face to the right to housing.

found the local resident? Those apartments are American commieblocks that are not going anywhere anytime soon. The fight against this tower is long lost. The community should let JDS built their tower to have something better to look at everyday than a giant glass tetris piece.

At least the Brooklyn Bridge doesn't also have such a monstrosity looming over it. Oh wait.

No but seriously, even though I'm a big fan of skyscrapers, how the hell did this get through to being placed in such a terrible spot, aren't there zoning laws in place in that area to prevent buildings over a certain height? This tower completely ruins the balance of the skyline for me.

Out of place - this has been said about so many NYC skyscrapers that turned out to be iconic.
Don't worry though, this won't do just that but if I had to bet I'd say they're putting their money on that neighborhood eventually evolving into something desirable and even trendy. Now it's sort of the opposite of that.
There's great deals on noodles and other ingredients on the other side of the bridge though, so much cheaper than Grestides.

How is it a slap in the face to the right to housing? Is affordable housing expected to be high design now?
Many incredibly hard working, tax paying New Yorkers I know had the right to get the F out of Manhattan and live in Bushwick or Queens because they can't afford to live in the city. They're not poor enough to have the right to live in a desirable neighborhood.
