Manhattan shouldn't be a gated community, and to write off this development as providing affordable housing in the form of a cheap looking 13 story tower next to an obscene level of design is tone-deaf.

And the tower in the park era isn't entirely reviled. It provided the opportunity to have green space, which is equally important to a resident, especially in New York.
That depends on what the "green space" is for, and how accessible it is for the rest of the neighborhood. For green space to be valuable to a high density city, it needs to be truly public space and not disrupt the normal street grid, and allow small scale retail to develope on the periphery, especially in residential heavy neighborhoods. We don't really need any more monolithic residential development in high density areas. And almost all of them look like a veritable ghost town during certain periods of the day (e.g. mid-morning or late night).

For example, close to where I live, even though Stuyvesant Town has a lot of greenery, it's hard to argue that it is readily accessible, or useful to the rest of the city. It is a rather isolated patch that is almost always used by the resident there, which ironically would be what you refer to as "gated community". Actually almost all tower in the park designs that I know have this quality of being factually or aesthetically forbidding to the rest of the city. Another smaller scale example around me would be the Village View towers between 2nd and 6th. With a lot of green space that is complete not useful to the rest of the city.

Virtually all of the "tower in the park" neighborhoods should be redeveloped or revamped in some manner. Some of which can accomodate higher density development, with equal number / or higher number of affordable units built in, but still leaving room for a lot of market rate units. Other places may be made more lively and better integrated by putting in street level retail around those towers. As of right now, the impact of these types of obsolete 1970ish developments have a similar impact on the rest of the city as giant parking facilities. These things you would just need to hide with retail and other facilities at the street level.
