Nothing in the article to suggest this is over 400m. Even a 100-storey tower can be less than 400m

Hard Rock? Why not not building a giant guitar instead?

The design is nice though...

That's a great design. Looks like the neck of a guitar - a theme based structure which is different from any other in that region.

The only thing I don't like about many of the Dubai designs is that they don't work off of each other, rather, they work against each other. That being said, there are some decent examples, particularly in the newer developments. Do we have any renderings of this one within its wider context?

For those not liking the design, could I ask for more thoughtful critiques?

I hardly come onto the supertalls as I get jealous as our city does not get supertalls, however I will start and now that I have I have found this tower and its amazing, the design is stunning.

I am glad that some people appreciate good architecture when they see it

Hard Rock Reveals Plans for 91-Story Mixed-Use Hotel in Dubai
November 16, 2007
By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor

Having entered the Dubai market with the Hard Rock Café Dubai 10 years ago, Hard Rock International Inc. will soon expand its presence in the thriving U.A.E. city with a new luxury mixed-use hotel development. The company just established a partnership with Tasameem Group to build Hard Rock Hotel Dubai, which will occupy a single 91-story tower at the core of the blossoming Dubai Trade Centre District.

Hard Rock Dubai, will be part of a massive mixed-use development, and will sit within close proximity of the Burj Dubai, presently the world's tallest building. The environmentally-friendly skyscraper will feature 350 guestrooms and 100 apartments, as well as office space, retail offerings, 32,000 square feet of meeting space and spa facilities.

Hard Rock is among a horde of U.S. developers that are jumping on the Dubai bandwagon. Last month, Donald Trump revealed that his company will open a property carrying the flag of its new Trump Hotel Collection brand in the city. To date, total hotel revenues have increased 20.3 percent from last year, according to an announcement made yesterday by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

Headquartered in Orlando, Hard Rock presently has a portfolio of eight hotels and casinos and 121 café's in 47 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Seminole Hard Rock Entertainment Inc.

I thought of playing cards as well.

It should be a casino

But I don't like the design and color. It's overkill and will age very badly.

It depends on what materials they are going to used for it. The better the materials, the longer it last. Dubai or any other places in UAE, however, is not permitted to open a casino.

I mean the design won't age nicely. It can look quite bad when it's dated for a decade.

I don't know if we can really conclude that. There are numerous buildings that were thought of like that, but they actually survived and became icons. I'm thinking the Eiffel Tower, the CN Tower, the original World Trade Centre twin towers, etcetera. This building is not in the same calibre in terms of singularity, but I've used some well known examples to get the point across.

I believe these designs will age gracefully, as long as they don't clash too heavily with their surroundings. That is why I'm looking for a wider 'in-context' rendering.

The article claims that the Hard Rock Hotel will be part of the Trade Centre District, which, as far as anyone knows was a master-planned community (see below), so I am not quite sure how it will fit in here....

This is where the plot for the World Trade Centre District is:

And this is what the finished product is supposed to look like:

You have not marked the entire WTC District and the render above is only for the 1st phase out of a total of three.

I marked the land area within the district which is going to be developed / redeveloped in the three phase development. As far as I understand, the rest is going to stay as it is.

The villa complex on the left site of the WTC Residences will be redeveloped as well and they are thinking even to demolish the 5 years old Novotel and Sofitel Hotel buildings. Word is that even the excibition halls will be gone when the new excibition center is build near the new Airport.

That was the old rumour, wasn't it? I thought they finally decided to leave the Novotel and Sofitel alone as well as the Exhibition halls + centre, as it is all one giant complex.

Anyway, we will not know for sure until they decide for themselves.
