Looking over the fence (totally legal)

View of raker beams as seen from lower LaSalle (totally legal as I was visiting the construction trailer)

Go down to your local Ironworkers' union hall and sign up for an apprenticeship.

What mgk said...

Also, be prepared to spend many years on the job before you reach the salary levels of other occupations. Be prepared for horrible weather, grueling work, and dangerous conditions on a daily basis. But most of all, be prepared for kickass views and the biggest sense of accomplishment you can ever feel.

this is what im worried about. I am 27 years old and make a decent salary fixing servers. I cant afford a big pay cut for many years.

You're welcome!

Assuming that you follow through on this, keep us all up to date on how your life as a budding apprentice Chicago Ironworker progresses!

Also, it is my sense that people in the skilled construction trades do pretty well, pay and benefit wise, even at the apprentice level. You won't get filthy rich doing it, but you'll make a decent living.

I spoke to the local office and a test is coming up in april. pay is actually pretty good. he also said its highly competitive to get in but I am a good candidate. I'll update you next year!

damnit, by the time I ever get in, all the buildings will be built!
