I've never seen a top 10 road list that didn't include the Pacific Coast Highway in California, amazing.

(I'm just waiting for the regulars on the Most Picturesque Roads in Europe thread to discover that seven of the top ten are not in Europe. Oh, the humanity!)

I'd add the Great Ocean Road in Australia.

It's debatable (and has been the subject a few arguments on the Aussie section) whether the Great Ocean Road is actually the best driving road in Australia. But yes it is definately a contender for one of the best driving roads in the world, regardless of whether or not it's the best in Australia, it's the most well known by far.

A reason why U.S. mountain passes are not as scenic as those in the Alps is that nearly all of them are located below the tree line, as well as surrounding mountains being relatively low compared to the summit altitude. Only a few passes in Colorado are truly above the tree line. Also, Colorados mountains are not permanently snow-capped. You need to go further north for that, for example to Montana or the Pacific Northwest.

Alpine passes are significantly lower in altitude than the U.S. Rocky Mountain passes, but are often above the tree line with very scenic views on snow-capped mountains and glaciers. Most Alpine passes are only about 2400 - 2700 m high, while Colorado passes are up to 3600 m in altitude and some dead-end roads are over 4000 m, which offer a spectacular 360 degree view.

Very spectacular roads in the U.S. Rocky Mountains;

* Going-to-the-Sun Road (Montana)
* Pikes Peak Highway (Colorado)
* Mount Evans Scenic Byway (Colorado)
* Independence Pass (Colorado)
* Beartooth Pass (Wyoming)
* Galena Summit (Idaho)

What about the Dempster in the Yukon, the Columbia Icefields Parkway in Alberta, the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, or the Sea to Sky in British Columbia? Here's the Dempster Highway and Columbia Icefields Parkway:

I'd imagine any one cutting right through the middle and out the other side.

Jeez that would be a horrible drive, have you ever been to Australia's inner desert? such road would be an infinitely straight road with... bushes on the right, bushes on the left, and nothing in the horizon. Actually, I can say it's not just a "would", but "is", since I've done trips there and it really is horrible and boring and therefore dangerous too.

Depends entirely on what one finds interesting. One of my favourite drives in Canada is across the prairie. It's so ridiculously flat I couldn't stop staring at it. When it does get hilly, those bits are bizarre as well. It almost looks extra-terrestrial: not a tree in sight, yet these weird 'bumps' all over the place.

By the time you hit southern Alberta it gets stranger again:
