Why does this expansion of the Abu Dhabi International airport have it's own thread? I presumed in accordance to the thread title that Abu Dhabi just as Dubai was building a send large International Airport with the code AUH, which struck me as odd.

MTC is the airport code of the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in the USA, north of Detroit next to Lake St. Clair. This project is happening as an AUH expansion.

Although it is an impressive project I do not think it deserves it's own thread.

I agree, the name of the thread is misleading and the MTC should be changed to AUH. However there is no other discussion forum for Abu Dhabi airport and is the only thread showing any kind of updates on the construction of the new terminal at Abu Dhabi airport....!!

I think it all falls back to the CEO. He was the guy who delivered Khalifa Port on time.

Abu Dhabi International Airport plans Dh1.65bn in upgrades

Quote:
Abu Dhabi International Airport yesterday revealed details of Dh1.65 billion worth of projects that were approved by the Government last week.

The three projects are additional aircraft stands, an automated passenger mobility system and a tunnel under the southern runway.

The nine new aircraft stands, which serve as parking slots for planes, will be suitable for widebody aircraft such as the Airbus A380. “Construction of the new hard stands has already begun, and they will go into operation gradually from the fourth quarter of this year,” Abu Dhabi Airports said.

The automated passenger mobility system is a set of trams that will connect passengers from the Midfield Terminal Building, set to open in July 2017, to other future terminals.

The third project is a southern runway tunnel that will connect the Midfield terminal to existing terminals. The new tunnel will stretch more than 720 metres in length and 38 to 46 metres in width. Construction of the tunnel will begin immediately, as the southern runway has been closed since January so that it can be widened to accommodate widebody aircraft.

Dh638 million road link for easy access to Abu Dhabi’s new Midfield Terminal

Quote:
ABU DHABI // Work will begin later this year on a Dh638 million project to build new roads, interchanges and motorways connecting to Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi Sunday announced plans to improve access to and from the airport’s Midfield Terminal, currently under construction, with the widening of the Abu Dhabi-Dubai motorway, construction of interchanges to the terminal and long-term car park and an underpass for local traffic, as well as special lighting for the section of the motorway below the aircraft approach path.

Construction is due to begin by September, with the road works expected to be finished in time to meet the completion of the Midfield Terminal in June 2017.

With the Abu Dhabi Government planning to triple the number of passengers at the capital’s airport with the addition of the new terminal, which will have a maximum capacity of 40 million people, the DoT aims to accommodate the resulting increase in vehicle traffic with the project.

“We have already expanded the highway in certain areas and with the increase in traffic around the Khalifa City and Al Raha Beach areas the addition of more lanes is needed before the completion of the terminal,” said Khalid Al Suwaidi, surface transport adviser and acting general manager of main roads for DoT.

Abu Dhabi Airports issues ‘revolutionary’ duty free RFP for Midfield Terminal Building at Abu Dhabi International

Quote:
Abu Dhabi Airports today issued what it called “one of the most revolutionary RFPs ever” to potential duty free retailers at the eagerly awaited Midfield Terminal Building (MTB). The new facility opens on 17 July 2017.

All interested bidders, comprising the leading duty free concessionaires in the world, today received a detailed presentation at a briefing in Abu Dhabi. This covered the scope and specifications of the duty free area and the different retail packages that will be available.

They also heard more about the scoring criteria that will be applied in the tender process and its timetable. A similar process for the food & beverage concessions will commence shortly.

As already reported, the duty free concession has been split into three packages (see table), A, B and C. The contract (or contracts in the case of multiple operators being selected) will be ten years in duration.

Abu Dhabi Airports said: “Reflecting the spectacular design and unique nature of the MTB, and to drive creativity and innovation, a new technology-led interactive tendering process is being adopted and the tenders are being issued in a completely new format. “In order to elicit the highest quality responses possible, the tender pack has been designed to be as spectacular as the terminal itself and matches its scale and ambition (see below). It contains a detailed retail vision book for the Midfield Terminal commercial space as well as a gallery of artistic images encapsulating some of the most creative retail, food & beverage and hospitality innovations from around the world. The pack also includes an iPad containing innovative technology, animation and augmented retail reality. This will enable potential bidders to interact with the terminal through a three dimensional experience, which has never been seen before in the industry.” The company said that responses should deliver a “wow factor” and allow retailers to “tell product stories in new and exciting ways and give the spaces real personalities of their own”.

It added: “The MTB will incorporate the very latest designs and systems in all aspects of its operation, and the duty free areas will be no exception. It is therefore hoped that bidders will be inspired to submit proposals that will completely reinvent the duty free experience and give passengers a non-traditional airport environment, delivering a range of multi-sensory experiences.
