I'm amazed by the sheer size of the new terminal unfortunately I'd say their behind the 8ball until this major piece of infrastructure becomes operational. DXB is advancing well ahead & DOH in second place thanks to the opening of their new airport. (Don't mean to sound negative as I look forward to the completion of the new AUH Terminal)

But EY is much smaller than the EK and QR. They only carry 14m passengers a year, compared with 24m for QR, and 49m for EK. Plus EY's major expansion won't begin for a couple more years. So right now their terminal is quite small but its enough for them.

The reason EY cannot think about a major expansion is because of the smaller terminal....It is definitely not enough for them and hence are building a new one!! Even airlines like Turkish which have expressed interest to add flights cannot do so as they do not have slots available at the required time!!

Of course they messed up the planning part.... Once the new terminal is complete there are reports that they start working on another terminal immediately!! Hopefully they have learned not to procrastinate anymore!!

I agree both carriers growth plans vary with EY's growth alliance driven whilst EK's far more ambitious going it alone with a large A & B order book.

They hate attention though and that has negatively affected their profile!!

An example was the free entry Miracle Garden in Al Ain (Abu Dhabi's 2nd city)....few years back Al Ain residents (mostly UAE nationals) complained how it was causing chaos and traffic jams and moved it to Dubai....now they charge a fee there and it is one more to add to the portfolio of the wonders Dubai has!!

Also the Emirate was the first to announce a citywide metro...from then till now, Dubai got its own metro, Doha will soon get one, atleast 5 Indian cities have had theirs also done!!

A major criticism of the projects in Abu Dhabi has been that even for the ones that they spend tons of money, it does not get as classy as the ones in Dubai or (lately) the ones in Qatar!!

I am however happy that the airport is making people turn their heads to the city!! I also hope to see a massive expansion of Etihad and its alliance once it is done!!

Also Abu dhabi was the first city in the gulf to actually develop a skyline back in the 70's

This is Abu Dhabi in 1982

Abu dhabi never even advertised the huge Zayed sports city they built in 1975. Abu dhabi has always kept a low profile

This new Terminal cannot open soon enough. I flew Etihad last month, and while the experience with the airline itself was great, the AUH sirport was terrible! Long security lines, lack of bathrooms, lack of bars and coffee. Until this opens I will fly Emirates.

August's progress...

I've been involved in the project since the begining of 2013, it's such an awesome (and challenging) project to work on but great to it really taking shape now
