CALGARY | Brookfield Place - 225 Sixth | 247m | 810ft | 56 fl | Com

A new tallest proposed for Calgary:

Calgary's skyline will again be redefined in a few years, with a new downtown skyscraper designed to stand even taller than the Bow.

Brookfield Properties submitted this week plans for a 56-storey, 247-metre tower to rise on the site of the former Herald building, along with a 178-metre similarly styled tower on the same block.

A stylized box whose edges curve and taper upward to its crown, it won't outshoot the Norman Foster-designed Bow for iconic architecture. But it will, by 11 metres, lay to rest the Encana/Cenovus highrise's bragging rights as tallest building in Western Canada.

The project, variously called "225 Sixth" and "Brookfield Place" in the development permit, replaces Brookfield's proposal for a simpler square tower at 1st Street and 7th Avenue S.W.

After the developer bought the parkade on the same block, it decided to do something more striking, said Jan Sucharda.

"This site is literally the centre of the downtown, so I think to be the tallest building in the city makes sense," said Sucharda, Brookfield's president for Canadian commercial operations.

The plan for 2.8 million square feet of new office space is a confident bet for the company that recently learned it is losing its anchor tenant at Fifth Avenue Place - Imperial Oil, headed for a southeast office park by 2016. Brookfield has just begun marketing the Imperial offices, but is hopeful it can find an occupant for the new project and open one or both towers by 2017.

Blah, if they are going to make something even taller than the bow than they should give it an iconic design.
None the less, this is a good sign, maybe there will be some supertall proposals in a few years.

It'll be a nice addition to Calgary's skyline but nothing very special. Still any skyscraper coming up that will overtake the current tallest is welcomed in my book (most of the time).

The new design is much better. Simple yet elegant ... assuming the cladding is of high quality. The tapering will be very interesting.

good international style design. I'm sure that shiny glass facade will look very good.

Calgary IMO has the most one of the most aesthetically pleasing skylines in the world. Whereabouts this is built will determine whether it works.

I agree! Places like Calgary, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Hangzhou are some of the most pleasing and balanced skylines in the world. Not the tallest but the best quality skylines.

Calgary has an extremely dense skyline, and it is huge for a city of just 1.3 million.

CALGARY | Brookfield Place | 247m | 811ft | 56 fl | 42 fl | Prep

Western Canada’s Tallest High-Rise Breaks Ground

Quote:
High Rise Facilities | October 30, 2013

Phase one of the Brookfield Place Calgary office development project is now under construction. The 1.4-million-square-foot first phase, or east tower, at 56 stories, will be the tallest structure in western Canada upon its completion. Cenovus Energy is the anchor tenant in the east tower with a 1-million-square-foot commitment.

Brookfield Place Calgary, located at the former site of the Calgary Herald building, is a full-block development site in the heart of downtown, bounded by 1st and 2nd Streets SW and 6th and 7th Avenues SW. Completion of the east tower is expected in the latter half of 2017. It is expected that Cenovus will occupy its one million square feet by Q1 2018.

“Several years ago we identified this block as the best-located parcel of underdeveloped land in the city, and today we begin construction on what will be the tallest structure in Western Canada,” said Jan Sucharda, president and chief executive officer of Brookfield Office Properties’ Canadian Commercial Operations. “Getting to this day, where the dream becomes reality, was only possible thanks to the hard work and support of so many, including His Worship Mayor Naheed Nenshi, our partners at Cenovus, and my colleagues at Brookfield.”

The pavilion space adjacent to the east tower will be named ‘The James K. Gray Gallery’ after the influential and revered member of Western Canada’s oil and natural gas exploration business. In addition to his more than 50-year business career, Mr. Gray is a noted local philanthropist and a member of both the Calgary and Canadian Business Halls of Fame and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

In addition to the east tower, development plans call for an additional office tower totaling approximately one million square feet, a 60-foot-high transparent glass pavilion, restaurants, retail shops and amenities at street level, and underground parking accommodating 1,100 parking stalls. A half-acre lit public plaza will traverse the site and will feature restaurants and cafés, public art displays, cultural activities and programmed activity provided by Brookfield’s award-winning Arts & Events program.

Yes, and if memory serves me correctly rumour has it that an even taller proposal is in the works.
