The public realm is that video is a disaster. Perhaps Calgary can start putting some of its money towards making those streets an appealing/attractive place to be. You'd never know that Calgary was wealthy looking at that video.

Disaster? Disaster is a road in Baghdad, not Calgary's street. I can see brick, stones and what it's seems granite. Maybe the most ugliest sidewalks will be re-developed with better material once when the dust settles. What did you expected from a city with such an harsh climate? Marble?

And you wonder why we Calgary people all moved to SSP with dick comments like this.

It's a damn video that reviewed a few projects. Have you ever even been to Calgary?

Yup. Freeze/thaw wrecks havoc on concrete.

Don't be so touchy... He has a point and the comment is not so bad. Look at the video at 1:15. There is no sidewalk on the construction side of the road (even in small streets in NYC they keep a covered sidewalk in operation) and on the other side, after a sea of asphalt for the cars, they have a 1 meter sidewalk where you can hardly pass eachother, and a huge parking lot behind. Doesn't look appealing to me, there is a world to win there. No city is perfect and I know that a certain period of the year it is too cold to walk outside in Calcary. But still... But I guess the city is working on it. It's not an easy job to change walkability in a city, that will take years.

My remark was a valid commentary on the public realm in Calgary. If you only want to hear sugar coated commentary, you've come to the wrong place. Things don't get better if we pretend that everything is great when it clearly is not.

And don't for a minute think you represent Calgarians. Most Calgarians I've met want the truth, good or bad. And yes I've been to Calgary.

Good grief. Since when is doing better than a city bombed out from war the benchmark we set for ourselves. Marble? No, I expect quality paving, well designed lamp posts/traffic lights, city benches, foliage, etc. You've got incredibly low standards if you think that public realm is anywhere close to being good enough. Go to Scandinavia or even Chicago. They have a harsh climate as well, but do a far better job in this area.

You said that the public realm was a disaster, which was a hyperbole since you can see street like that in every North American city. I suggest you to re-watch the video, you can easily see brick and granite sidewalks. I've never been in Calgary but I'm sure there are good looking streets too there. And I know for sure there are street in Chicago far worse than that... unless you want to compare Michigan Avenue with a street under development in Calgary. Not quite a fair comparison, don't you think? So the argument "in x city they do better" doesn't make too much sense to me since we're still talking about streets that are experiencing huge redevelopments.

So, Calgary has Canada's Tallest outside of Toronto, right?
