But yes, I was discussing metro regions, not municipal populations. Using municipal populations is a bad way to compare cities, as municipal sizes are arbitrary and random from city to city. Calgary's municipality covers essentially the entire metro region, while Toronto has less than 1/2 of its metro population living within the central municipality. Many US cities central municipalities are even smaller, something like 600,000 people live in San Fransisco's central municipality, despite the metro region being far, far larger.
Boston to Providence is the same distance as Toronto to Hamilton. And like the latter, the entire area between Boston and Providence is built-out and densely populated.

Agree. If you add the population of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire you get 9,127,000 (2014). Listing Boston at 8.1 million or San Francisco at 8.6 million is a little ridiculous. It's comparable to listing Toronto at its GGH population of 9.2 million. People still do it though. Boston (4.7 million) is slightly larger than Montreal (4.1 million).

This is exciting! Is the Teleus one rising too yet?

I love how this looks so similar to Brookfield's NYC towers also U/C.

LA is 4 million in the city proper, Chicago around 3 then Houston with just under 2.5 (NYC is by far the largest with ~8.5m)

But in the US it's more accurate to measure the metros since that's where many people actually live/work.

The two are very similar. If you use the Golden Horseshoe as your basis, then Boston has 8.1 million people and Toronto has 9 million people. If you follow a more narrow perspective then Toronto has 6 million and Boston has 5 million. Either way, this idea that Boston is some kind of provincial town as many people have, including Americans, is highly off base. It's a thriving bustling world-class city with the world's greatest universities, incredible research centers, high human talent and a bustling core. Just because it doesn't have as many skyscrapers as other NA cities doesn't mean it can be dismissed off-hand.

LAND AREA
Golden Horseshoe: 12,186sqmi
Greater Boston: 9,690sqmi

POPULATION
Golden Horseshoe: 8,759,312 (2011), ~9,000,000 (2015)
Greater Boston: 8,041,303 (2014)

DENSITY
Golden Horseshoe: 739ppsqmi
Greater Boston: 830ppsqmi

Except Hamilton isn't counted in Toronto's CMA numbers. Nor Oshawa.

That doesn't mean its an inferior city of course, you are limiting yourself pretty seriously if you refuse to recognize that cities smaller than 6 million or whatever cannot be great. Montreal, Boston, etc. are in that range and are incredible cities. Hell, Toronto was in that range only a decade or so ago.

ultimately these inflated population figures for US cities come from the way they calculate MSAs, they draw the cities "borders" a bit far out. Canada on the other hand likes to draw its border a bit too close, excluding places like Burlington and Oshawa from the Toronto CMA while they should really be included.
