250 west 55th street and 1717 Broadway a block away; It's a nice little cluster of towers being developed in the area!

Beloved Roseland Ballroom is Being Decimated Right Now

Quote:
It's been dark days for some concert-going enthusiasts after it was revealed in November that live music institution the Roseland Ballroom on West 52nd Street would be gutted to make way for, surprise!, a high-end residential tower. Now, interior demolition work has started at the two-story venue that opened its doors in the 1950s, DNAinfo reports. Although it has yet to be confirmed, it is speculated that CetraRuddy is behind the incoming tower. An unspecified project called "Midtown Tower" on their website, which describes a 59-story, 468,300-square-foot structure with ground-floor retail, is being eyed as the new building for the site.

This tower will be largely on the 53rd St side, which is hideous. I wonder if the old facade on the 52nd St side will be saved. I believe that most theatres are landmarked.

Why? Why people are so freakin obsessed with this box=bad design thing? There are only two options - good or bad design for given place. And boxiness doesn't have anything to do with it.

As for this design - Foster started this postmodern 'fun' in here so I suppose others will continue.
And I don't think I like that to be honest. It looks as if it was taken straight from Miami.

Miami doesn't have any towers like this.

I never said that. I implied it for this particular building, but not in general.

I agree. I personally really like the design. I think sales would be pretty successful here especially with foreigners because it's close proximity to Times Sq.

I like it the style - mix of Zaha Hadid and Aqua Tower.

That's nice! At first I thought it was a tower designed for Miami or something, but then seeing the setbacks towards the top; it definitely has that New York twist to it

Looks fantastic, build it!

Also is it me or does it look taller than 206m?

I wonder if the facade will be concrete or metal.

I dig it too, wish it was taller to make its presence known more. Street level integration looks great as well. But it's funny that proximity to Times Square might be a selling point for foreign buyers. For me that's probably a deal-breaker, as Times Square is avoid-at-all-costs territory for me.

I have to think the alternating facades and undulating upper floors would make concrete pretty complicated... But then, 56 Leonard is doing it. I suppose they could pour the slabs straight, and then affix the curvy balconies after the fact.

New york never ceases to amaze me. Another fantastic tower and a great contrast to all the buildings in the vicinity.

I agree, but I don't know of any residential tower in NY that has a steel frame, rather than concrete.
