Palace of Xifré, Madrid, demolished in the 1949
It was a private residence built in Moorish Revival Style. This is one of the most moronic demolitions in Madrid, this palace was a small Alhambra in the heart of Madrid.

This is the Ministry of Health, which stands in the same place

This palace (Monroe Palace) in Rio de Janeiro was demolished when Brazil was ruled by a right wing military government in 1976.

That demolition was due to vendentta.

Most the buildings on this thread were demolished because they represented decadence and a classical capitalist and artistic flair. That is why 99% of the time they are replaced with socialist concrete boxes.

Old Detroit Museum of Art

Demolished to make room for an expressway, though the museum had long since moved out by then.

Nope most of them were built by socialists and councils. Look at the buildings demolished in Madrid just a few posts up as a basic clue. That is not private money friend, that is Government money.

The ultimate in pointless demolition in Britain, the destruction of the Euston Arch and the neo classical Euston Station in London in the sixties. The Great Hall at the original station was like the Palace of Versailles and the classical arch provided an imposing entrance to the station. Both were swept away to be replaced by a miserable concrete station that is widely hated and an ugly office block that used to house British Rail.

Well, at least in Madrid that was not the case. If you look at the dates of the demolitions you will see most of them took place during the francoist dictature. That worked this way: somebody owned a palace inthe center of Madrid and someone else (who was well related) wanted to buy it, so the owner was forced to sell his property at a low price to let the buyer to demolish the building and build a monstrosity and make a fortune.

Of course the Ministry of Health is associated with the Government, but this is an exception. Some of the other Madrid examples that I posted:
-Palace of the Marquis of Portugalete. Demolished to build a private religious school (not associated with the Government)
-Palace of the Duke of Anglada. Demolished to build a hotel (not associated with the Government)
-Palace of the Duke of Medinaceli. Demolished to build an apartment building (not associated with the Government)
-Hotel Florida. Demolished to build a department store (not associated with the Government)
-Church and Hospital of Our Lady of the Good Event. Demolished to build a smaller church and apartment buildings (not associated with the Government)

Conclusion: all these buildings were demolished in order to make money and it was a private activity, the Government was not involved

Arch of Triumph, Palmyra

I think it's safe to say all of Palmyra will be flattened by those barbarians.
