And by the way, since the A310s will be retired from service, which comparable aircraft could be used to handle long-haul routes with less seats than a B77W? Is PIA looking to get the B787, or is it looking towards getting the A330?
5 a320 are to be inducted this month, they are requesting the government for 15 more a320. PIA's current 777 fleet does offer AVOD but they will be upgraded soon and designs of the new J class are not yet known.

The airline has not yet made any desicion regarding a310 replacement. There were talks about inducting a330-200 but that is still under consideration.

It's interesting that PIA has chosen the A320 family now for its short-haul requirements... I recall that it has been a staunch supporter of Boeing, with the 737s, 747s, and 777s it operates, and I am pleased to see it modernize as a result of privatization. The only thing, though, is that has PIA retired its B747 fleet, given tha fact that it has been getting more B77Ws?

The 747's will be part of domestic/hajj operations until the new 77W's arrive next year.

Ah ok... well, I hope the B777-300ER fleet will be larger and well-maintained for many years to come. Hopefully, the privatization will help PIA modernize its cabin fleet on board its existing aircraft soon too to compete with other carriers in the region.

PIA launches in-flight SMS, call service for long route flights

Service to be made available on PIA's Boeing-777 aircrafts which ply longer routes. Email to be introduced shortly.

While Pakistan has air services agreements with 45 countries, PIA flies to just a handful of them because of shortage of aircraft. PHOTO: AFP/FILE
Pakistan International Airlines on Wednesday launched in-flight phone call and SMS service on its Boeing-777 aircrafts, Express News reported.

PIA spokesperson Mashoor Tajwar said customers could avail the service in exchange for a nominal fee which can be paid through their credit cards. He further said the airline will start an in-flight email service very soon.

The Express Tribune had reported in December last year PIA aimed to be the country’s first airline to offer Wi-fi and phone services.

PIA’s Managing Director Junaid Yunus had said then that initially, the facilities will be offered on PIA’s nine Boeing-777s, which have been deployed on longer routes to Europe, US and Canada.

While Pakistan has air services agreements with 45 countries, PIA flies to just a handful of them because of shortage of aircraft.

Still, it is widely believed in the industry that PIA benefits from one of the world’s most loyal brand following. “I am convinced that our point-to-point service will help us take our share back from other carriers,” Yunus said, referring to direct international flights without any stopovers.

It has 10 737-400's, 3 a330-300's and 6 a320-200's. That adds up to 19. Take a peak at their facebook page and online Pakistan aviation forums

Wow, but then the probably need to market a lot more! Do they have that many flights to that many destinations and carry that much passenger volume?! They never blipped on the radar! Though I have recently seen their A330 and knew something was up, but 19!

Who is PK?

And it wasn't on www.piac.com.pk yesterday, i checked after I saw your post. hmmmm!

Too many livery changes over the past few years without focus on service and the rest is history. Lets see how this pans out!

PK is the airline code for Pakistan International Airlines.

And by the way, the new logo and streak for PIA looks really promising indeed... much simpler, yet much smarter! Hopefully, with a new chapter in the airline's history, hopefully, it will become a stronger carrier for South Asia and it will become a more reputable flag carrier in the years to come.

Also, I wonder if Shaheen will use its A330s to fly long-haul destinations to Southeast and East Asia where the economies are developing very fast, as well as to Europe to compete with PIA? And will the airline order more of that aircraft type to spread its wings further?
