Kuala Lumpur would be a good destination for PIA's B777s. Bangkok too would be good as well, if not Tokyo. But, I think the B777s operate better as nonstop services between Pakistan, China, and Japan... perhaps restoring Karachi-Tokyo would be a good idea on a B777.

Corporate results: After worst ever year, PIA cuts losses by 77%

KARACHI: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has attained operating profit of Rs1.67 billion for the first quarter of 2014 – January 1 to March 31 – as against a loss of Rs5.65 billion of corresponding period last year.

The national flag carrier has attained the operating profit for the first quarter after a lapse of four years.

This was declared in the board of directors meeting, chaired by Secretary Aviation and Chairman PIA, Muhammad Ali Gardezi, held at the airline’s head office here on Tuesday. Managing Director PIA, Muhammad Junaid Younas was also present in the meeting.

According to the results of first quarter 2014, the total revenue stood at Rs28.0 billion as against Rs25 billion of 2013.

However, the net loss after paying financial costs and taxation stood at Rs1.98 billion as against Rs8.62 billion last year, which shows a remarkable decline of almost 77 per cent in losses. The loss per share has dropped from Rs2.86 to Rs0.56.

The government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been taking bold steps including privatisation to enhance the national flag carrier’s customer services, on time flight arrivals and departures with safety in order to make it a profitable entity.

The premier last week had also given his approval for induction of five new Boeing 777 jets into the fleet of Pakistan International Airlines.

The board appreciated performance of the national airline and efforts of Shujaat Azeem, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Aviation and Chairman PIA Gardezi for the revival of PIA.

I wonder if it will need to make a stopover somewhere, like in the UK or Southeast Asia because that would be a seriously long flight... Manila could be a great stopover since it has nonstop services to North America's West Coast already, but I wonder if PK will resume such a flight since it stopped its KHI-BKK-MNL-NRT service some time back.

My guess is that they will use BKK for LAX and SYD

Hmmm... that would be a good option if PK uses BKK, if not MNL (since the latter does most of the SE Asia-N America W Coast nonstops). I remember TG used to operate BKK-LAX nonstop (with the A340-500)... maybe it's feasible if they use the B777-200LRs.

KHI-LAX would definitely be a polar flight. There really isn't any good stopover, besides perhaps Vancouver, Canada. The trip would be 8367 mi on the shortest path. I predict it would take about 16 hours, but such a flight would be possible with PIA's B777-200LR.

If it's a polar flight, it would be better off flying to San Francisco instead of LA since the flight would be shorter.

Flying to SFO instead of LAX would save less than 300 miles, so it probably isn't worth going to San Francisco if LAX has better demand.

Consider, though that SF has lost its direct connection to India via Shanghai some time back with Jet Airways, amd we have quite a lot of South Asian residents in the region. Plus, we have the Silicon Valley to boot that could attract more business travelers from places like Hyderabad in India and Karachi, among others.

I think that PIA has considered all their options, and they seem to think that LAX is their best bet. Los Angeles has twice as many Pakistanis as San Francisco does, according to this at least: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistani_American

Correct me if I am wrong, but PIA only have Mumbai and Delhi flights into India, which probably wouldn't gather enough feed either way.

These flights are always full considering that PIA is the only airline which flies between two countries. Both routes are operated by a310/737.

It is surprising that PK is the only airline that does Pakistan-India flights (with destinations in Pakistan being more than just KHI, like ISB, LHE, and a few others)... I wonder why AI or AirBlue do not operate such flights.

As far as I know, Shaheen and AirBlue are not allowed, all slots are taken by PIA. SpiceJet of India wanted to fly to ISB, don't know what happened.

How many slots are available for all flights between Pakistan and India? And how old is the current flight service agreement between the two nations?

12 in total, PIA was allowed to serve India in 2004 after a ban of few years. There might be new agreement soon, both governments seem peaceful towards each other.

That's a huge step forward for the carrier indeed! Is that the same J class found on board its B777s? Plus, are those seats lie-flat (180 degree recline) or angle-flat (less than 180 degree recline)? And with the reintroduction of J class, will that mean all seats on board the A310 have PTVs (IFE) on each and every seat?

That's so few! No wonder all those flights get so full because of the very limited options... so if one wants to fly between India and Pakistan, one has to go via Dubai or Abu Dhabi, for example? I hope a new agreement will be made very soon to mount so many more needed flights between the two nations... I wonder how crowded the roads and rails are with this very limited air option.
