Next stop is Nepal’s biggest stupa, the Boudhanath (world heritage).

34.
Only being there yourself can really give you the feeling of the scale of the stupa. Its huge!

Those tempels around Durban Square Kathmandu are from the period around the 17th century.

Part 3 Nepal trip

Part 3 Ė a bit on the road and Bandipur

We are on our way from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Since its a pretty long distance for doing that by bus in one day we made a stop in the little town of Bandipur.
Since the festival of Deewali was still going on it was pretty quiet on the nepalese roads, not so many busses or trucks. On our way back from Chitwan NP we would see that these can be very busy indeed!

80.
A foggy pass from a lower pass we crossed just after leaving Kathmandu.

81.
Green Ďhillsí, rivers and terraces form the landscape.

82.
Just going walkabout after our lunch I finally spotted on of those typical 'himalay' trucks you see a lot in Northern India and Nepal.

83.
Hills and mountains as far you can see.

84.
Our view from the balconys and garden from our hotel in Bandipur. If you are in luck you can have spendid views of the Himalaya across the valley.

85.
Lovely green and relaxing surroundings.

86.
Our hotel seen from the street and the typical flag of Nepal.

87.
The main street of the village.

88.
Hills at the other side of the village nearing sunset.

89.
Touristic no way!

90.

91.
The next morning a view at some of the green hills just outside the village.

92.

I that morning we made a little hike in the hills around the village with some nice viewpoints.

93.
A spider we passed during the walk, this pic was zoomed in a bit but that spider was still about 20cm long!

94.
Ja a bit of a view of the Himalayaís (Gurkamassif, where also the Manaslu (8163m) is part of).

95.
Lets zoom in to the river down below in the valley.

96.
Valley

97.
Valley - 2

98.
Back in Bandipur.

99.
We are entering Pokhara.

After this we arrive in the city of Pokhara. Next part will be some pics of the town and also the first 2 days of our 11 day trekking to and from ABC

Part 4: Pokhara and day 1&2 of ABC trek

Pokhara and the start of the 11day ABC trekking

Before we left for our trekking to ABC we had 1 day in Pokhara. After the trekking we normaly should have had 1,5 also in Pokhara.
But because of unrest surroundig the elections in Nepal we went 1 day earlier to Chitwan NP.
Thats why I choose to post all the Pokhara pic before the trekking.

100.
The mountains (in this case Annapurna II with 7937m) are clearly visible from the gardens of our hotel in Pokhara.

101.
Pokhara lies at Phewa Lake; water with colourfull boats and in the background the white mountaintops of the Annapurna massif.

102.
More then enough mountains at the horizon;like Annapurna South (7219m), Machhapuchhare (6993m) en Annapurna III (7555m) & II.

103.
Daily work at the lake.

104.
The most important streets in Lakeside Pokhara (for tourist anyway), so lots of shops, restaurant, hotels, bars etc

105.

106.
Streetscene Pokhara

107.

108.
The wellknown shape of the Fishtail (Machhapuchhare) with on the left some parapenters.

From now on we will go up into the mountains! 11 days of trekking in the Himalaya's.

Day 1; Naya Pul – Tikhedunga
In the morning we went by bus from Pokhara to the startinpoint of the ABC trekking; Naya Pul (new bridge). Finally we start!
On this day we start at a height of 1055m en we end at an altitude of 1540m. Just a nice relaxed start of those days in the mountains.
During the trekking we stay at lodges, which are basic but really fine.
Simple rooms, toilets and showers and nutricious food!

109.
From Naya Pul we walk along the river to the next village where the checkpoint is (you need a permit to walk here!)

110.
Rural and Fishtail.

111.
We walk all day in a nice green landscape. Down along the river you can see some buildings which also had our lunchstop!

112.
Water is plenty around in this region; the bridges are in all sorts avaliable; the known hangbridges,
but sometimes also only some wooden planks or trees to walk over.

113.
On route.

114.
It wasn't alwys blue skies but that isn't a bad thing

115.

116.
View from the lodge in Tikhedunga, where we also had our dinner.
after dinner is time to relax with some cardgames, reading or listening music.
After that its early into the sleepingbag and enjoy a well earned rest!

Day 2; Tikhedunga - Ghorepani

Day 2 was for me the most hard day of the trekking.
On this dat we gained a lot of altitude; we went from 1540m to 2750m.
And that only trought the "Nepalese stairs". That mad this day really hard.

117.
Shortly after we left Tikhedunga we had to cross 2 suspension bridges.
but first let the donkeys pass!

Donkeys are used in the Annapurna region for transporting all kinds of goods, materials, food, gas etc etc.
You will see them plenty while on your hike.

118.
Stairs, stairs, stairs.

119.
not the kind of stairs we are normally used to. Its more a collection of rocks in all kind of sizes and put on the ground at random.

120.

121.
We are still going up...

122.
Nice landscape and trees with blossom.

123.
Lots of little villages are in the landscape on those first days of trek.

124.
Partly we walk in some forrest area. During Spring lots of Rhododendrons are full with blossom.

125.
We arrive in “lower” Ghorepani.
We still need to go up one last hill before we arrive at our lodge in "upper" Ghorepani.

126.
Arrived at....but oh dear...those clouds around the mountains....Lets see how the weather will be next morning.

Next early morning the steep walk up to Poon Hill (3210m) was on the program.
From there you have some awesome views during sunrise of the Dhaulagiri (8167m) massif and the Annapurna (8091m) massif.
Oure gides mentioned a 50/50 change of good weather next morning...
So we were happy to hear the rain falling late in the evening and we were woken up but other groop at 0400AM and heard the words; clear weather!
YES!!! So lets go the Poon Hill! (in the next series of pics )

Bandipur looks really nice! Do you mind sharing the name of the hotel you stayed at? It looks gorgeous!

Nepal part 5: Poon Hill / Ghorepani-Tadapani

Day 3: Poon Hill / Ghorepani - Tadapani (2590m)

Like mentioned before on day three we first went up about 500m (again with lots of 'stairs') towards Poon Hill.
Our group left from the lodge just over 0500AM.
Then you are happy again to have some good lights with you so you can see were to walk and put your feet down
Early on it was a bit fresh but not too cold.
After one hour hiking up we were finally up on the Hill
And those views, mountains and colours...man o man... AWESOME!
There were numerous people there but it was quieter then I expected to be!

127.
Not at the top yet, but allready great views and colours!!

128.
Minute after minute everything is getttin better visible @ PH.

129.
The first sunrays on the Annapurna I en Annapurna South.

130.
We zoomen even wat verder in op een aantal bergtoppen.

131.
De Top van Annapurna South staat mooi te wezen met de zon die er op gaat schijnen.

132.
Fishtail

133.
The moutains at the back of the big Dhaulagiri are catching more and more sun!

134.
Here also enough prayerflags.

135.

136.
Mountains over 6000m tall! far away in the very deep valley of the Kali Gandaki from Poon Hill in the sunlight.

137.
Beautifull icy world up high!

138.
Before getting to those huge mountains you have to cross a whole bunch of 'smaller ones'.

139.

140.
The mighty Dhaulagiri (I) (8167m) and some people in the front of it

141.
Our group with 3 of the 4 guides we had and a stray dog from the town down below.

We walk back to the lodge since we still have to have breakfast!!

142.

143.
Although some clouds are allreaday forming around the mountains the view is better then picture 126

After breakfast we went towards our next town for an overnight stay; Tadapani.
We first needed to go up an other hill/pass; almost same height as Poon Hill.

144.
Nice views!!

145.
Looking back at Poon Hill, with the viewing tower on top of it.

146.

147.
Everywhere you look its not flat

148.
We arrive in a very green and forrest area with great views of the valleys.

149.
since we went up a whole bit we need to go down somewhere. Steep decent in a narrow gorge with several waterfalls.

150.
Passing a small bridge.

151.
Green everywhere!

152.
And standard during our trek; just before getting to the endpoint we always had to climb up again with those typical nepalese stairs!

153.
View from our lodge in Tadapani.

154.
Sunset on Annapurna South.

160.

161.
Nepalese flat!

162.

163.
We arrive in Chhomrong, but this village is spread out over the hillside so for our guesthouse we needed to walk down quite a bit.
Ouch in a couple of days we have to go up these stairs again!

164.
Looking across the valley from Chhomrong.

Part 7: Machhapuchhre Base Camp

thanx for the comments!

Day 6; Himalaya - Machhapuchhre Base Camp

On day 6 of our walk we gains some more height!
The area we walk in becomes really different, no more woods but lots of rock!
We end today at the MBC kamp @ 3700m.
Allready a great spot with just awesome views!

We leave that day pretty early, so some parts of the valley are still in the shadows.
since we still have to cross some rivers and waterfalls the path there can be icy!

180.
The blue houses are our tea stop in the morning, still in the shade.

181.
A piece of Fishtail behind an other "rock"

182.
Icy passage.

183.
Other tricky part of the trail, steep down before getting to the slippery bridge.

184.
Our tea stop but now in the sun.

185.
No more forrest here!

186.
Somewere at the back of the valley MBC waits...

187.
Top of the Fishtail.

Looking back at the valley we walk trough.

189.
Frozen waterfalls.

190.

191.
Having a break for a drink and a snack.

192.
Icy peaks high above us!

197.
Our place for a good night sleep!

Before having dinner we did a little extra walk up a ridge @ 3865m.

198.
Walking on the ridge.

199.
Don't fall or else its a long way down!

200.
The view from the ridge with our lodge down in the valley.

201.
Our path is in the high grass on the ridge...

202.
The glaciers left a big scar in the mountains!
