Riserva Naturale del Fiume Ciane, Sicilia Ciane river Natural Preserve

The Ciane is a short river in southern Sicily, Italy. It flows into the sea in correspondence of Syracuse's port, after a run of 8 kilometres (5 mi) , having received the waters of the Anapo river.

The name, deriving from the Greek cyanos ("azure"), is connected to the myth of Anapos and the nymph Cyane. On its banks are present spontaneous grows of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), probably sent to Hiero II of Syracuse by the Egyptian ruler Ptolemy II Philadelphus. The area is now protected as part of the Natural Preserve of Fiume Ciane and Saline di Siracusa, created in 1984.

Festa dei Ceri, Gubbio - Umbria

The Ceri Festival takes place in Gubbio on May 15 of each year .
The procession through the streets features big statues of Saint Ubaldo, Saint George, and Saint Anthony, in order. They are mounted upon immense wooden pedestals each hoisted by a team of "Ceraioli" (runners) clad respectively in yellow, blue, or black.
The processions ends by carrying the Ceri to the Basilica di Sant' Ubaldo, which stands on top of Gubbio's Mount Ingino, and an obvious competition occurs as Saint Ubaldo's ceraioli try to close the basilica doors before George and Anthony can join Ubaldo inside.
This is one of the oldest Italian folklore events and is not to be confused with a historical re-enactment. It is an event that is repeated annually and continuously since 1160. The party still plays a key role from a social and cultural point of view for the eugubin community. The citizenship lives this event with great attachment strong passions and feelings expressing values and contradictions .

The importance and popularity of the event is reknown even at the regional level so that since 1973 the Tre Ceri represent the symbol of the Umbria Region and are stylized in its gonfalone and official flag .

Jessup , Pennsylvania conducts a nearly identical "Race of the Saints" on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
Saint Ubaldo Day is Jessup, Pennsylvania's observance of Gubbio, Italy's La Festa dei Ceri. Both celebrations honor the life of Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini who was canonized as Protector of Gubbio. The eve of his death anniversary, May 15, is marked in Gubbio by the procession known as La Corsa dei Ceri. Jessup conducts a nearly identical "Race of the Saints" on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

The procession through the streets features small statues mounted upon wooden pedestals each hoisted by a team of "Ceraioli" (runners) clad respectively in yellow, blue, or black. Each of these hardwares weighs approximately 400-450 pounds (900 in Gubbio).

The event in Gubbio is bigger in many ways: a longer course, more participants and thousands more spectators, and a higher level of excitement and intensity. On a much smaller physical scale, Jessup's Saint Ubaldo Society has followed the traditions of Gubbio as closely as possible, which has resulted in a highly authentic celebration. In spirit and regard for Saint Ubaldo and La Festa de Ceri, Jessup's event is on par with that of Gubbio.

LA FESTA DEI CERI , Gubbio - Umbria ITALY

Everything seems like always,
all seems equal to itself,
but the Ceri ... nothing is as it appears,
passion renews everything! "

Gubbio, May 1, 2016
Our heart begins to pulsate, the agitation of souls sparks memories, passion prepares our spirit.
May is reborn ... the 15th is near and the time is about to expire.
"Moving Fragments" - Ceri Festival - Gubbio

SAINT UBALDO DAY , Jessup - Pennsylvania USA

Selinunte, Sicilia

Selinunte ( Ancient Greek: Σελινοῦς, Selinous; Latin: Selinūs) was an ancient Greek city on the south-western coast of Sicily in Italy. It was situated between the valleys of the Belice and Modione rivers. It now lies in the comune Castelvetrano, between the frazioni of Triscina di Selinunte in the west and Marinella di Selinunte in the east. The archaeological site contains five temples centered on an acropolis. Of the five temples, only the Temple of Hera, also known as "Temple E", and a part of the "Temple C" have been re-erected. At its peak before 409 BC the city may have contained up to 30,000 people, excluding slaves
