Pietra di Bismantova, Emilia Romagna

The Pietra di Bismantova (literally Stone of Bismantova) is a geological formation in the Reggiano Apennines, in the comune of Castelnovo ne' Monti, province of Reggio Emilia, central Italy, c. 45 km from Reggio Emilia. It has the shape of a narrow, quasi-cylindrical plateau (measuring 1 km x 240 m) whose steep walls emerge c. 300 m as an isolated spur from the nearby hills. The top has an elevation of 1,047 m above sea level. It is included in the National Park of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano.

The spur is composed of yellowish calcarenite over a marl basement, all formed in the Miocene as a sea bottom. It includes fossils belonging to a tropical environment. It is surrounded by woods, mostly of hazel trees (Corylus avellana).

The Pietra di Bismantova is mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy (Purgatory, IV, 25-30).

Pulchiana, Sardegna

This is a typical "conca fraicata", the name given to such buildings, essentially stone huts, in the area of Mount Pulchiana in Gallura, Sardinia. The use of adapting building walls to naturally carved large rocks is extremely ancient here. Mount Pulchiana is a huge mountain made of one unique block of stone, the biggest "inselberg" in Italy.

"Pajari", Salento - Puglia

The pajaru (or paiaru, or pagghiaru, or furnieddhu, furnu, truddu, chipuru, caseddhu depending on the place) is a rural construction made with the drywall technique

Normally these are isolated buildings in the countryside, but there are also some that are joined in groups of 2 or 3 to form more complex buildings. They today represent one of the most characteristic features of the Salento landscape so that they are protected and valued by local institutions.

These are buildings similar to the most famous trulli, shaped like a truncated cone, with circular or quadrangular planes and constructed of stones made from the surrounding "dry" land, without the help of any mortar or support. The buildings usually have a single room without windows to the outside. They have a remarkable thickness, which ensures a fresh interior environment even during the warmer months. The furnieddhi were used as temporary shelter or storage (the name makes them originally considered as straw storage), but in fact they were used for the most diverse uses, not least as peasants' dwellings during the summer when they moved from the center inhabited to live in rural labor from dawn to dusk. They rarely find rustic fireplaces, tanks and sticks set in the mighty walls.

Furnieddhu
In Salento, in the Maruggio area, however, the term pajaru denotes another type of construction, always dry but with a roof made of sparse beams that give a look very similar to the Irish cottage. Those constructions that form the furnieddhi or pajare in the Lecce' s area are called trodduri .

Italian old traditions

Roccolo del Sauch, Trento - Trentino Alto Adige

Photographer back by Sara Filippi, su Flickr

The Roccolo del Sauch placed within the Commune of Giovo (Trento) is an ancient system for the capture of birds. It is a vegetal construction of beech trees and spruces suitably woven and plated to create a practicable gallery with a grassy field at the center. After a large number of birds had settled in the space at the center of the tunnel, the staircase was agitated by the whipper's whistle. Horizontal flight led the birds straight to an almost invisible net stretched between the arches of the tunnel.
Since 1968 hunting is forbidden and the center was reopened in 1993 as an observatory and environmental education center.

The roccolo is made up of three fundamental parts:

• the toll booth: the pointer or turret of the birder located in the highest part of the roccolo completely hidden from the vegetation.
• the round: a small meadow facing the valley with potato plants in round shape from which the buckets, branches without leaves, emerge.
• colonnade with pergola: it surrounds the roccolo and is made up of plants (firs and beeches), which are characterized by traces of capture; is round or horseshoe.

Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, Roma - Lazio

The Papal Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the Walls is a Roman Catholic Papa minor basilica and parish church, located in Rome, Italy. The Basilica is one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome and one of the five former "patriarchal basilicas", each of which was assigned to the care of a Latin Church patriarchate. The Basilica was assigned to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The Basilica is the shrine of the tomb of its namesake, Saint Lawrence (sometimes spelled "Laurence"), one of the first seven deacons of Rome who was martyred in 258. Many other saints and Bl. Pope Pius IX are also buried at the Basilica, which is the center of a large and ancient burial complex.
