Motel 6 going in near Las Vegas Speedway for NASCAR fans, EDC concertgoers

NASCAR fans and Electric Daisy Carnival concertgoers will soon have a place to sleep near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

A Motel 6 with 87 rooms will be built on a vacant 6.9-acre parcel spanning the northwest corner of Interstate 15 and Speedway Boulevard, under a plan approved 3-0 Wednesday night by the North Las Vegas City Council. Councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown and Councilman Richard Cherchio were absent from the meeting because they were traveling.

Construction could start as soon as September on the $8 million hotel, which will not have a casino, said Turk Cobell, a managing member with Speedway Hotel LLC, the project’s developer. The three-floor hotel will stand 33 feet tall, with a 41-foot-tall tower flashing the Motel 6 logo.

After discussions with UNLV and the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents, UNR had agreed to turn over most of its Southern Nevada functions to UNLV and focus on Northern Nevada.

The Reno-based institution — the state’s only currently accredited public medical school — is expected to turn over control of Las Vegas-area residency programs and send dozens of staff and faculty members to UNLV’s medical school.

The two public medical schools hope to have Las Vegas-based faculty and residents transferred from UNR to UNLV by July 1, 2017, UNLV School of Medicine spokeswoman Pamela Udall said. About 120 faculty members are expected to make the transition.

The people of Las Vegas desperately want to steal the Oakland Raiders

Results have been mixed so far. One poll commissioned by the Sands Corporation (a potential partner in a hypothetical Raiders move to Vegas) showed overwhelming support for the idea. A poll backed by the MGM showed overwhelming distaste, but those who support a move claim that poll was worded in a misleading manner in order to convince people to fund an expansion of the town's convention center instead. The conclusion: Polls are the receipts of snake-oil salesmen.

Recently, the local Chamber of Commerce assumed the mantle of due diligence. An 83-question survey was formed -- undoubtedly parsed through layers of marketers making sure every word was perfect, every question thoughtful, every possible response precalibrated, because genuine responses require focus groups in 2016. That document was emailed to 10,000 Vegas residents; one thousand of those might see it, should they be burdened by weak spam filters.

NFL stadium site options narrowed to five priority, three secondary

Five sites in the valley today emerged as leading contenders to house a proposed 65,000-seat stadium that could bring the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas.

Backers of the stadium told the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee that the primary spots under consideration are the Bali Hai golf course south of Mandalay Bay, about 63 acres off Russell Road and Interstate 15, some 100 acres controlled by Station Casinos off Tropicana Avenue and I-15 and two UNLV options.

Bali Hai was not among the nine possible sitesthat were presented to the infrastructure committee two weeks ago. The two UNLV sites are 42 acres on Tropicana near Koval Lane — the original site discussed for the stadium — and campus land by the Thomas & Mack Center.

Backers said today that they’re also considering three secondary options that have been previously discussed: Wynn Resorts’ golf course behind its Strip casinos, MGM Resorts International’s festival grounds across from SLS Las Vegas and the Cashman Center.

In Las Vegas, Sands’ net revenue rose 3 percent to $356.5 million in the second quarter. Despite a 5.2 percent decline in casino revenue, the company’s rooms revenue increased 8.8 percent while its food and beverage revenue grew 5.8 percent. Convention, retail and other revenue also increased 1.7 percent.

Sands announced plans in May to build a new 17,500-seat live music venue behind its Venetian and Palazzo resorts on the Strip. The company is partnering with the Madison Square Garden Company on the project.

Rob Goldstein, Sands’ president and chief operating officer, said on the conference call today that the project would hopefully break ground in the first quarter next year and would take about 18 to 24 months to build. Goldstein said the venue would be “very impactful” to Sands’ part of the Strip.

“Our neighborhood gets much better with this arena,” Goldstein said.

Fortune 500 company to open North Las Vegas distribution center

Fanatics Inc., a Fortune 500 company known for manufacturing licensed sports gear, clothing and other merchandise, will open a distribution center in North Las Vegas by June 2017, under a deal approved Thursday by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

The company will receive $813,790 in tax incentives for the move, with plans to move into a 400,000-square-foot distribution center already under construction just southwest of the Interstate 15 and 215 Beltway, said Lonnie Phillips, senior vice president of operations at Fanatics Inc.

In turn, Fanatics is projected to spend about $8 million in capital equipment investments at the site, with plans within the first year to create 189 jobs that will pay an average hourly wage of $16.87. Hiring will start in January, with local residents making up 80 percent of the workforce.

New hospitality center at SpeedVegas poised to open

It won’t be long before spectators will have a terrific view of their friends and family hurtling down a track in an exotic sports car going more than 150 mph.

The new 22,000-square-foot hospitality center at SpeedVegas, a racetrack experience south of Las Vegas at 14200 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will open its doors to the public in August.

“It’s designed to give you that first emotional buzz when you get here,” said Aaron Fessler, co-founder and CEO of SpeedVegas, which offered its first driving experiences and ride-alongs in mid-April.

When the new two-story center with a distinctive curved roof opens, it will get spectators close enough to the track to feel the whoosh of desert air as the cars whiz past on the 1.5-mile track that includes 12 turns and corners, 15-degree banked turns and a half-mile straightaway. The entire course has a 60-foot change in elevation.

The new center will have function rooms that can accommodate 50, 500 or 1,000 people, making them suitable for everything from bachelor and birthday parties to corporate events.

T-Mobile Arena’s public preview of hockey setup awes fans

Taking one step Monday afternoon from the outdoor Toshiba Plaza into T-Mobile Arena brought more than a 30-degree temperature drop.

With ice in place, a Zamboni making the rounds and fans checking it all out, the future home of Las Vegas’ NHL franchise felt like a full-fledged hockey venue for the first time since opening in April.

“This is awesome,” said Andrew Patrick, a local 46-year-old nurse practitioner. “I’ve been here for a couple concerts but I know they’ve said they built this arena for hockey with sightlines, locker rooms and all that.”

T-Mobile Arena’s open house was an opportunity for people like Patrick to acquaint themselves with the setup ahead of the team’s first game in October 2017. Patrick put a deposit down for two season tickets when they became available 18 months ago, and added another pair on Monday.

Las Vegas’ NHL team making slow but steady progress on finding a name
Murray Craven aims to make announcement in next few weeks

Craven hopes to unveil the name in “the next few weeks,” but that’s not entirely up to the organization. They’re working closely with the NHL to thoroughly vet all serious options, including looking into trademark and copyright issues.

In the days after the NHL’s Board of Governors voted unanimously to award Las Vegas a team, Foley submitted “eight or nine” possibilities that he owned domain names for. That list is pared down, with rumors spreading among fans at the T-Mobile Arena open house earlier this week that only two remained.

Recent murmurs indicate the Silver Knights or Neon Knights could be in the running, after fans universally loathed Foley’s original preference for Black Knights.

“Not the Black Knights,” lifelong friends Kevin Everage and Keith Calhoun said in near-unison when asked about their preference for the name at T-Mobile Arena earlier this week.

Many fans continue to support names with gambling tie-ins like the Aces, Dice or High Rollers. But the NHL long ago mandated that those wouldn’t be considered.

Foley was never enamored with any of those options anyway, he said in June. He’s also ruled out other fan suggestions like the Rat Pack or any snake-centric ideas.

Foley, above all else, wants a name that “evokes power, authority and team spirit.”

Hyperloop One announces opening of North Las Vegas manufacturing plant

Hyperloop One announced today the opening of a 105,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas, where the company is testing its transportation platform that propels high-speed pods down pneumatic tubes. The company, which calls the plant Hyperloop One Metalworks, expects to use it for testing and producing some parts for its prototype.

An executive for the company in May talked about its intention to build a manufacturing plant near the test site, but today’s announcement provides more information about the plant’s role. The decision to build the facility comes as Hyperloop One prepares to conduct a demonstration of its transportation platform at the Apex Industrial Park by early next year.
