Martin Brudnizski is a solid interior designer and will do a decent job at Monte Carlo/Park MGM/whatever, but knowing how cheapskate MGM is these days, and their propensity for de-theming lately i wouldn't expect too much from this. If it were Steve Wynn re-developing the hotel it would be one thing but no way MGM positions this place to be a direct competitor with flagship Aria right next door (which is enjoying a turnaround, but still has challenges) or the Bellagio which MGM hasn't been the best steward of, since taking it from Steve Wynn, but is still thought of as a top tier property.

The north strip properties seem most interesting. Resorts World will be a humongous addition (possibly too big) to the north strip. I haven't seen much from Alon that makes me think it will be any sort of game changer--at least from the early renderings, but you can always bet that across the street Steve will have his new Paradise Park as the talk of the town. If the Fontainebleau deal goes through (finally) the strip between Spring Mountain and Sahara will have three brand resorts, a major renovation at Wynn/Encore and a mid-market newcomer in the Lucky Dragon, along with a new-ish hotel that could really use a shot in the arm at SLS. That section of the strip might all of a sudden make the Trop/LVB corner feel like Downtown.

High-speed rail system most desired transportation mode for Las Vegans

It turns out a high-speed rail system linking Las Vegas to Los Angeles was deemed the “most beneficial to improving daily life” among 500 local adults surveyed by the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance.

XpressWest was supposed to start construction by late fall on the first leg of an $8 billion high-speed line connecting Las Vegas to Victorville, California, but that date was pushed to early 2017.

Ridership projections are due in August and an environmental review is expected to be released a month later for the second phase, which would extend the track 50 miles from Victorville to existing commuter rail service in Palmdale, California.

Eventually, the commuter rail would be upgraded to high-speed rail if California’s system is ever built.

Recommendation approved for $1.4 billion Las Vegas Convention Center project

Plans to expand and renovate the Las Vegas Convention Center took a big step forward today when, after months of analysis and debate, tourism officials approved a recommendation for the $1.4 billion undertaking.

In a unanimous vote, the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee backed a proposal that would fund the convention center project and create a seven-member oversight panel to supervise the development.

Nine sites discussed for NFL stadium; cost could hit $2.1 billion

As officials try to get a better sense of exactly where the stadium would be built, project backers today presented the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee with a range of specific options. Most of them are on or near the Strip or on land owned by UNLV.

Backers also said the total cost of developing the stadium — including land, parking and off-site infrastructure — could be as much as $2.1 billion. Excluding land and other such costs, the project’s price tag had previously been pegged at some $1.4 billion.

Additionally, committee Chairman Steve Hill today said he planned to ask Gov. Brian Sandoval for a two-month extension of the group’s deadline to finalize its recommendations. The committee’s original deadline, set by an executive order from Sandoval, was the end of this month.

Among the possible locations presented today are UNLV’s 42 acres on Tropicana Avenue near Koval Lane, Station Casinos’ 100-acre site at Tropicana and Interstate 15, MGM Resorts International’s festival grounds across from SLS Las Vegas, UNLV land by the Thomas & Mack Center, the site of the former Riviera hotel-casino and the Cashman Center.

The list also includes some 62 acres on Russell Road just west of I-15, the former Wet ‘n’ Wild water park site on the Strip and the golf course behind Wynn Las Vegas and Encore.

Total cost would vary depending on which site is ultimately chosen, but backers have indicated that the amount of public money they are seeking — $750 million, likely from hotel room taxes — would remain the same.

Hill introduced an alternate financing plan last month that would reduce the public contribution to $550 million. But that proposal was not discussed today as the discussion focused largely on location-related issues.

Per the estimates presented today by the Sands-Majestic team, the potential development cost could range from $1.7 billion to $2.1 billion.

Touchdown: Wild Wild West site looks like ideal place for NFL stadium

It's the so-called West Tropicana site, a 100-acre piece of ground located a stone's throw from Interstate 15 and now anchored by Station Casinos' Wild Wild West property.

• It's situated close to the Strip but far enough away from McCarran International Airport that it shouldn't interfere with airline operations, unlike the Trop-42 site located directly across Tropicana from the airport.

• It offers quick and easy access to the 15, unlike many of the other eight sites that have been brought to the table.

• It's plenty big. For comparison, the Dallas Cowboys' massive AT&T Stadium complex covers 72 acres. Few other potential Raiders sites in Las Vegas offer that much ground, especially cramped properties like the old Wet 'n Wild lot south of SLS Las Vegas and the Riviera acreage now being cleared by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

• Speaking of the LVCVA, the West Tropicana site wouldn't hinder the expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center. And that's important, because the expansion is a critical need.

• It's bigger than MGM Resorts' festival grounds at Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The festival site definitely has its appeal, given its proximity to Strip resorts and the Las Vegas Monorail route, but the West Trop location offers abundant room for game-related activities — tailgating, game-day entertainment and festivals and so forth, which are a huge part of the NFL fan experience. It also would ostensibly be cheaper — at least on a per-acre basis — because it's not a piece of prime Strip-front real estate.

• Although it's not on UNLV's campus, it's close. Definitely closer and in a much more attractive location than Sam Boyd Stadium, the Rebels' current home field. But with all due respect to UNLV, the two sites it has brought to the table aren't nearly as good as this one. They're small, and the Trop-42 site is just too close to the airport. When Southwest Airlines is telling you that a site would disrupt their operations, it's time to look elsewhere.

Sandoval to extend time for panel studying Las Vegas stadium

Gov. Brian Sandoval will extend the life of the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee through September so the 11-member group can further evaluate a proposal for a 65,000-seat domed football stadium.

The governor said additional work by the committee vetting potential stadium sites and financing options for the proposal is “time well spent.” The panel, created by executive order last year to study projects critical to Southern Nevada’s tourism economy, was supposed to complete its work and disband by the end of this month.

Committee Chairman Steve Hill said Monday that he would ask the governor to extend the committee’s work through the end of September. The extra time would allow private developers behind the stadium to complete research that would help the committee make a recommendation on the project, Hill said.

Wynn on Raiders in Vegas: 'I want to make it happen'

TMZ Sports caught up with Wynn in Los Angeles recently and asked him about the possible move.

A TMZ photographer asked Wynn, "How do you feel about a team like the Raiders coming to Vegas?"

"Love it, absolutely love it. I'm really working hard to make sure that can happen...gives everyone another excuse to come to Las Vegas."

Wynn goes on to say that he doesn't think any city is better suited for the team.

He also says he has spoken to team owner Mark Davis.

Wynn says he is trying to make it happen.

Sandoval signs order extending special tourism panel to work on stadium project

Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed an amended executive order enabling the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee to operate through Sept. 30.

“I created this body one year ago to bring community leaders together with many of the brightest minds in the gaming and hospitality industry to explore and prioritize projects and funding mechanisms to enhance Southern Nevada’s ability to compete in an increasingly competitive market,” Sandoval said in a statement on the order of the extension.

“The committee has done an outstanding job in managing and pursuing a robust and complex agenda but its work is not complete,” Sandoval said. “The additional time will allow the committee to thoroughly evaluate sites for a potential stadium and work with private partners to finalize any recommendations for legislative action and provides the opportunity for recommendations concerning the law enforcement needs of Southern Nevada.”

Palace Station to Build New Tower, Restaurants, Cinema and More

27-story tower, new pool, bingo hall, movie theater and a rooftop restaurant are planned

Station Casinos re-branded their parent company Red Rock Resorts Inc. earlier this year and now intends to import some of their Summerlin-style, Red Rock Casino razzle dazzle to the Palace Station in a dramatic and out-of-the-blue expansion. The multi-million, 21st century makeover intends to revolutionize the 32-year-old property, upgrade its competitive edge with the north Strip and play on the resort's motto of "Strip Quality. Local Value."

Plans begin for next phase of Centennial Bowl project in northwest Las Vegas

The Nevada Transportation Department’s board on Monday agreed to start looking for a consultant who willsolicit bids from construction companies to design and build a ramp connecting southbound U.S. Highway 95 to the eastbound 215 Beltway.

The additional construction, expected to cost $135 million to $162 million, is listed in a series of nearly 200 planned projects that would be funded if most Clark County voters approve a ballot measure Nov. 8 to extend fuel revenue indexing for another decade. A three-year indexing plan that has raised the fuel tax by 10 cents a gallon will end in December unless voters approve the extension.

State transportation officials have said that the full interchange could be built by 2020 if the fuel tax measure is approved. If the measure fails, it will cost $155 million to $214 million to complete the project by 2034 because of available funding and a piecemeal approach to construction.

Dana White on $4 billion UFC sale: 'Sport is going to the next level'

UFC has been sold for $4 billion in a deal announced Monday.

Talent agency WME-IMG revealed that it is partnering with its owner Silver Lake Partners, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and MSD Capital, the investment firm of Michael Dell, to take over the mixed martial arts company.

"We've been fortunate over the years to represent UFC and a number of its remarkable athletes," WME-IMG co-CEOs Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell said in a statement. "It's been exciting to watch the organization's incredible growth over the last decade under the leadership of the Fertitta brothers, Dana White and their dedicated team. We're now committed to pursuing new opportunities for UFC and its talented athletes to ensure the sport's continued growth and success on a global scale."

At $4 billion, it stands to be the most expensive transaction for an organization in sports history.

The sale is remarkable considering that brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta bought the organization in 2000 for $2 million.
