Metro network of Helsinki, Finland

Hi all!
Becouse the metro of Helsinki Finland is almost never discussed on this forum, I decided to start a thread. The metro of Helsinki isn't very long, but it's beautiful:

Then, the trains. There are two types of trains in use in Helsinki metro.
The older type is M100 series. The newer is M200.

I think that the west extension is just planned and they are working with it, but they didn't decide anything yet. Altough it is almost sure that the west extension will be built in next five years.

I think that the trains are nice too, but its stupid when they place commercials on the sides of the trains, seen here: http://www.przegubowiec.com/travel/...06_metrp218.JPG
it's everyones own opinion, but i think the commercials are odd...

You can find banners also on the DT4 trains of the Hamburg U-Bahn. And I don't care, because these banners bring the company some revenues which lowers the burden of public funding.

Station platforms are 135 m long. The Metro uses 1524 mm gauge (same as state railways) and third rail power supply (750V dc). The Metro control centre is situated at Hakaniemi station.

Three city metro trains in Helsinki, Finland

Metro of Helsinki has an exceptional colour theme in the one of the city's metro train. In fact, this is the advertising (it's not painted but taped by the colour film) of Helsingin Sanomat (the biggest newspaper in Finland) and it tells that "you could also read the news from these cities" from that newspaper. Only the one metro train has taped like this.

Really good idea, in my opinion!

Some metro cars are "painted" like New York's, London's, etc.

Phantastic idea!! Reminds me a little of the Hauptbahnhof station of the light rail in Bonn that has big copies of the logos of some famous metro cities on the walls, for example the Paris logo and a couple of others:

But the Helsinki train is much cooler.

I already had the idea that a new metro line somewhere could have each station an architectural copy of a typical station in another famous metro city: One station like a typical Paris vault, the next one like a typical London tube station, the next one like Washington's coffered vaults, the next one marble-clad like in Moscow, the next one a cave like in Stockholm, and so on. <--- My idea, I offer it for free to anyone who is about to plan a new metro line

HELSINKI | Metro

This is a bilingual metro, with signage and announcements in both Finnish and Swedish. The first section opened in 1982, and the latest section to open was the branch to Vuosaari in 1998. Kalasatama was added as an infill station on the trunk line in 2007.

Here are some photos of this metro system
Source: http://simaniv.livejournal.com/22187.html

Kamppi (Kampen) ~ "Battlefield." Opened 1983. The station is located right in downtown and is connected to an underground intercity coach terminal and a shopping centre.

Kamppi station entrance. The system does not have entrance turnstiles.

Fare control

Ticket machines

Rautatientori (Jarnvagstorget) ~ "Central railway station". Located at the railway station.

This is the only station whose anglophone name is also announced. It was flooded in 2009 and was closed for 4 months as a result.

"Friday night faces" abstract composition

Kaisaniemi (Kajsaniemi) ~ "Kaisaniemi Street." The name sounds the same in Finnish and Swedish and is thus announced just once. It opened in 1995 as an infill station.

Hakaniemi (Hagnas) ~"Hakaniemi Square."

Sornainen (Sornas) station

Kalasatama (Fiskhamnen) ~ "Fish Harbour" - the metro's newest station.

Herttoniemi (Hertonas) station

Siilitie (Igelkottsvagen) ~ "Porcupine Road."

Itakeskus (Ostra centrum) ~ "East Center." This is a junction for the two branches. This station contains three tracks and two platforms.

North branch:

Myllypuro (Kvarnbacken) ~ "Mill on the creek."

Kontula (Gardsbacka) ~ "Farmer"

Mellunmaki (Mellungsbacka) - world's northernmost metro station

Southern branch:

Puotila (Botby gard) ~ "Trade"

Rastila (Rastbole)

Vuosaari (Nordsjo) - Naked Island/North Sea

Here's the official metro map. Are you Finnish by any means? Or are you just fascinated by the most awfully colored metro in the world? Just wondering. Nice to get an own thread, guess there's some info in the Helsinki development threads.

This color was trandy in the early 1980's.
Personnaly, I have nothing against iot, it gives some style to the system.

When will opened the section under in construction ?

It always felt like a dark place... and pretty old design.
Let's hope the western branch, which is planed to be build soon, will be nicer.
