Helsinki metro automation called off
23 Jan 2015

FINLAND: On January 19 Helsinki city council backed a December 18 decision by the board of city transport operator HKL to terminate the metro automation contracts signed with Siemens in 2008-09. HKL said negotiations with the supplier had failed to agree a way that the troubled project could be completed on time or within an acceptable cost.

HKL is keen to see the first phase of the Länsimetro extension to Espoo brought into service as soon as possible after construction is completed, with the opening now scheduled for August 2016. However, this could not be achieved without rethinking the delayed automation project

Helsinki - Espoo light rail study commissioned
02 Feb 2015

FINLAND: Ramboll and WSP have been appointed to study the costs, feasibility and wider impact of constructing the proposed 25 km Raide-Jokeri orbital light rail line. The route linking the Itäkeskus district of Helsinki with Keilaniemi in neighbouring Espoo would partially replace the region’s busiest bus service, the Bussi-Jokeri, which carries 30 000 passengers/day.

Helsinki and Espoo councils will review the consultants’ conclusions in 2016 before deciding whether to go ahead with constructing the line, which could open in 2020-22. The alignment would be mostly segregated from other traffic, and designed with ‘a focus on smooth, uninterrupted service’. There would be 32 stops, and it is estimated that weekday ridership could reach 100 000 passengers/day by 2040

VR Group to retain Helsinki suburban network
Wednesday, February 11, 2015

HSL unveiled a new livery for its suburban trains on February 5, which will be applied to the fleet of Sm5 Flirt EMUs

HELSINKI Regional Transport Authority (HSL) confirmed on February 10 that it will negotiate a five-year transitional contract with Finnish national train operator VR Group for the operation of suburban services in the Helsinki area from April 2016

In the longer-term, HSL plans to launch a competitive tender for the operation of these services from 2021, although it says that if it cannot successfully conclude negotiations with VR Group by April, it will launch a competitive tender with the new contract starting in June 2018

It looks so ridiculous. Why build underground when there's nothing but trees above the ground

When is the next section of the Helsinki metro expected to be open to the public for service? Also, how long will the section be?

Helsinki City Rail Loop cancelled
Tuesday, February 24, 2015

FINLAND's finance minister Mr Antti Rinne announced on February 24 that plans for the Helsinki City Rail Loop have been shelved after the government failed to reach an agreement on funding for the €900m project in a meeting of the Council of State

The 7.2km double-track underground line would have branched off the existing line to Helsinki Central south of Pasila, with three new stations serving Töölö, City Centre and Hakaniemi. Construction of the loop would enable the diversion of some commuter services away from the Pasila – Helsinki Central line, easing congestion on the existing line and improving rail access to the central districts of Töölö and Hakaniemi
