Annabelle Selldorf is amazing of course.SHOP would probably do a great job...
Oh please. What ridiculous nonsense.

Yeah, my reply to that would be, just look at Zaha's 425 Park proposal: it's contextual, reflecting a long history of 20th century Midtown office towers, but with a personal, 21st century twist. I don't think it was ostentatious, and you'd hardly have noticed the bit of flair at the bottom when viewed from afar, but it was certainly a singular design.

I certainly don't agree that NY is or should be a museum. Let's remember that classics like ESB and Chrysler were in their time considered extremely adventurous designs. Stifling creativity out of fear of "ruining" the skyline is a slippery slope.

Yes, flashy buildings are not what NY needs.. NY is a musuem of architecture.

New York can have all the tall buildings it wants. It can have hundreds if not thousands of supertall skyscrapers of every shape and size. But Dubai is ******* that prom queen, not New York.

And listing all the supertalls that NY has, in a commiseratory fashion, in a 'no wait guys, we've got all these beautiful women to make out with', smacks of desperation.

This is exactly why you should wait for more concrete information before rushing to put 549m in a thread title based on rumours and speculation.
You are right, NY is not the prom king.

What? New York City is nothing but flashy building that pay homage to the ego of their designer.

Haha, that may be true. But really, it's such a gorgeous building. I mean, I was cheering for the Devon Tower in OKC.

Anyways, back on topic.

NYC still has the 472m building going up, that will essentially be an new tallest for NYC, outside of the antenna on WTC.

Hmm, the 61 floors figure seems somewhat disappointing, but I think judgment should be reserved until more figures are released. The design, height, and the details in regards to the floor count haven't been released, so it is a bit premature to get too disappointed, or optimistic, for that matter.

^ Maybe so.

I just want a great design if it's over 500m. Something like the Shanghai tower, or the Waldorf Astoria proposal Chicago had..

Better yet, just build a taller Tower Verre

Totally agree! I would love for Zaha to design a prominent tower in NYC. All those other starchitects have done plenty of work in the city, not that I don't want to see more of them, but it would like to see a different style added to the city's street scape and skyline.
Zaha is as unique and as futuristic as it get and she only has one building going up in the city right now, i'd be ecstatic to see what she could do with a sizable tower.
I also wanna more of BIG, so I wouldn't mind if he was chosen, same for Rem Koolhaas who i can't believe has no work in the city; same with Nouvel, everything he's done in the city has been a hit, I can just imagine a supersized version of TV as mentioned above.

For a parcel without a height limit, building non-square floorplates does not mean removing buildable space. The total buildable floor area, determined by FAR, can be stretched over as many floors as necessary to maximize it. Irregular designs are somewhat more expensive to build (and the more bespoke they are, the more expensive they get). Also they can potentially, but not necessarily, be a less efficient distribution of floor space... but it's not true to suggest that an irregular design requires the developer to sacrifice buildable floor area.
