I actually think this points towards a more general point to be made on BIG. Their projects look adventurous and daring on their animations, but usually turn out both impractical and harebrained.

Apart from other cities, but even in NYC this design isn't new.

750 Seventh Avenue.

Which coincidentally has offices of Morgan Stanley because they are too stubborn to move to new towers in the HY.

Unfortunately, that was was just a promotional render of what the site could support. I don't think that this is the final design though so something taller can still rise here, just probably not 1800 ft.

I am not happy with just how the vision of a soaring centerpiece to the burgeoning Manhattan West Side is being wasted on a vanity project for an overrated starchitect. Tishman Speyer I thought would have gone for the gold, in record time... and merely settling for a bronze. They lost the rights to develop Hudson Yards during the fiscal crisis to Related and I thought they would respond buying this property and developing it with their own signature tower. Now I don't really care when it starts, it will be a run of the mill thousand footer(and barely so) among several buildings of similar size, and the hanging criss crossed, ziggurat gimmicky gardens thing running through won't be the focal point. At this point I'm more excited about HY phase 2 than when the Spiral starts up.

Agreed. Bjarke needs to GTFO of Manhattan before it's too late

can we get a rename for this thread? we're due for it...

TRD: Tishman Speyer files plans for $3.2B Hudson Yards tower

Quote:
The developer officially filed plans Thursday for the Spiral, an office skyscraper that is slated to cost $3.2 billion.
[...]
The Spiral, named after its design feature of a continuous band of terraces that wrap around the building, will rise 65 stories to a height of 1,005 feet, and has an alternate address of 509 West 34th Street.
[...]
According to the DOB plans, the ground floor will have retail space — Tishman Speyer has said in marketing materials there will be about 27,000 square feet of retail — while the second through 62nd floors of the building will be office space. Asset management giant BlackRock is considering the building, along with neighboring 50 Hudson Yards, for its new headquarters

This should have been the centerpiece of the West Side, yet Tishman goes along with yet another gimmicky Bjark Ingels BIG tower. I wish they also had made it more mixed use, with a hotel/condo element for higher floors and offices for the lower floors. Lost opportunity to have made a signature statement when a few years back we had the presentation of the "Hudson Spiral" vision soaring 1,800 ft. into the skies of the West Side of Manhattan. Of course it was just a vision, but a real iconic, soaring tower should have gone here...it will be nice enough with the criss cross gardens and such, but this lot should have given rise to a new icon for the 21st century Manhattan skyline, even if 1,500-1,600 ft were more realistic. Now it will be merely one of several in the 1,000 ft range in the area..like I lamented, a lost opportunity for something breathtaking.

Amen to that. I would say that a great design takes precedent over height in my opinion but even if Tishman decided not to go after a signature tower for HY, a better design would've been good enough for me but now we have to settle for another BIG dud.
This has to be the most disappointing project in the city.

Bjarke is the new Vinoly. He preiously designed some nice looking projects, but degenerated into a budget-architect favored by cheapskate developers. Seems like all he cares about is money now.

It's a pity too- not all of his more recent work is bad. The Pyramid is quite nice and very unique, imo. I actually would have liked to see something like that for the hudson spire site, only extended to about 1800 ft. and with different cladding.
This project is actually worse than 2 WTC. I would rather have that on this site than the current proposal.

Given the name, I always thought dusting off the design of the abandoned Chicago Spire would be perfect.

I'm too lazy to photoshop it into a HY overview, but you get the idea:

Crazy expensive, no doubt, but then apparently that dull BIG box also costs over $3B?

Personally I daydreamed about making the Chicago Spire the centerpiece of Long Island City sometimes.
