Why does he keep getting banned? All his posts I've ever seen have been very informative and sometimes whimsical but never crude or rude. What's the deal?

Picture by Luca Della Rina, on Flickr. ILNY reports demolition is underway, and has posted photos on SSP.

A sign on site says demolition is to be complete by January 2016...

Still demolishing. They have made some progress of at least 4 floors on the last building.

The buildings on site are almost gone. The last, and tallest is just one floor left.

I'm very sad to see this beauty being thrown down. It could have been preserved and used as an entrance or an addition to the future lobby as the Hearst Tower.
Shame on me that I never went to visit it while I was living there!

Man, it sucks so bad to see those lovely classical townhouses torn down, especially the Rizzoli.

And people keep telling me NYC would do as much as it could to keep it's historical treasures...
Hell no, it's not! It should never allow gems like these to be torn down!
There always is a way for peaceful co-existence and the buildings could easily have been saved.
Instead, they're lost forever. For what? For global modernist randomness, congrats.

I second that!
For a country that doesn't have too long of a history, I think it should be vital to preserve classical buildings - at least somehow integrate the fašades into the highrises/skyscrapers built on top of them. Not only would this be a fantastic way to combine classic with modern architecture, but it is cultural heritage, which is sad to see getting lost forever (being German it always makes me sad what WW2 has destroyed all over Europe).
NYC is wiping out its own architectural history.
Sure, it would cost some money to integrate the classic architecture in a new project, but it would be so worth it.
Just coming back to NYC from Australia, I saw the same happening there.
Everywhere in Melbourne they are knocking down old buildings to build new highrises/skyscrapers, there. I appreciate good, modern architecture and skyscrapers fascinate me, but honestly I see a lot of crappy designs popping up (e.g. the BIG 2WTC design) and wonder how we will look at them in 20 or 30 years from now. It seems to me as if now with the possibilities of today's technology, the architects are playing around like kids to build some kind of oversized sculptures, rather than functional buildings with a timeless design.

NYC has massive historical districts that rival anything in Europe.

No, of course they don't. NYC totally lacks the historical depth of European cities, where most old towns go back to medieval or even ancient times.

But that's not the point. NYC is constantly tearing down really valuable gems, while there would be other options. Like including the historical buildings, using other construction lots or tearing down nondescript buildings without greater value. Instead, it often chooses to demolish true gems. It needs to be more self-aware in this regard.
