Don't necessarily agree with that, glass towers can be quite beautiful and become iconic in their own right. However a lot of it is uninspired... really gorgeous and historic buildings however should be preserved at every opportunity. And for certain whatever goes up must have a great aesthetic value of its own, and not merely made functional because of economics.

I guess all those entire sections of old Manhattan that are illegal to demolish are not accountable...

I mentioned this before, I really wish they preserve the fašade, but I just don't see how they will build a tower with 3-4 buildings with different facades at the base.

This is headed for the wrecking ball and it is inevitable. I think it's really important especially here selecting the right kind of architect. Maybe tab Stern again or ShoP??

To be honest, most of NYC is like Paris in number of old buildings. I say let the real economic districts grow, because Manhattan is an island with not much room, and thousands of landmarked buildings. There's only one big empty grassy lot on the island I can think of, south of the UN Building.

So they're saving the small one on the left? I'm usually a fan of skyscrapers but I felt sick the first moment I saw this picture

I can't believe they are destroying 29!! This building is older than the Empire State Building. It's Art Deco and ornate old New York at it's finest. Disgusting!

Exactly. 35 is stunning but it can be replicated fairly easily. It's aesthetic is fairly common. 29 is much more unique, taller and quintessentially New York in both look and feel

Apparently, Vornado owns 35, so it's coming down too.
I was reading on Wired NY that the (stunning) art deco building is not getting demolished.

I hope so.

They should preserve the front and use it as entrance.

29 should have been landmarked years ago. Do those people not do their jobs?

Hadassah relocating downtown
http://nypost.com/2014/01/28/french-...r-14th-street/

Quote:
After cashing out of its Midtown building and forfeiting millions of dollars gleaned through its Madoff investments, Hadassah will make a pilgrimage to relocate downtown.
Known as The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, the supporters of Israel and its hospitals will land in 46,175 square feet on a portion of the 7th floor and the entire 8th floor at the Trump Organization’s 40 Wall St.
Currently, its national headquarters is stretched inefficiently over eight floors at 50 W. 58th St., which it sold in 2012 for $71.5 million.
Some years from now, the former parking garage is expected to be redeveloped, together with an adjacent property on West 57th Street, and join the area’s skyscraping towers. But for now, the owners declined to comment.
A Cushman & Wakefield team led by David Green and Carri Lyon, along with Jon Herman from the firm’s Corporate Finance & Investment Banking group, represented the organization in its search and new lease.
Another C&W team of Jeffrey Lichtenberg, Frank Cento and Scott Silverman represented the Trump Organization, which had an asking rent in the mid-$30s and will create a high-end turn-key installation. The group also qualifies for downtown benefits.

Strawberry, not Fresh & Co, is what Hadassah's owners have. Which is am even worse building.

But yes, I don't think these two projects are connected; I don't know how the Hadassah redevelopment will be that competitive, though. Walking by the site today, 27-33 W 57th will have Park views, but the Helmsley redevelopment will obscure whatever replaces Hadassah/Strawberry.

Given the above, I would tend to hedge that Vornado IS behind Hadassah, as it seems that site is relatively useless & its air rights would be much more valuable if transferred over to 29 W 57th. But, on paper, that does not seem to be possible.

It would be cool if the air rights of the Hadassah site could be sold to the Park Lane and 29 W development, to have a two very tall towers development on this end of Central park. Then the Hadassah building should be razed and be redeveloped into a highrise office building or so with a small retail base. That would give enough park views for the residential towers, give this stretch of the city another office building, more retail and such.

Whoa, for a brand new building, that's very classically beautiful. Are you suggesting this might get folded into the development?

The brand new 17 story high rise offers 134 beautifully designed, spacious studios, one and two bedroom New York City suite accommodations with full kitchens – ideal for individuals staying a week or longer.
From the article.

Am I misunderstanding that?

Ahh. Bummer for them then if they did all that renovation for nothing. Beautiful building.

An Iconic Bookstore Facing Demolition Fights to Survive
http://nycitylens.com/2014/02/an-ico...ts-to-survive/

Quote:
An online petition initiated by a group calling itself Save Rizzoli Bookstore, which includes Rizzoli staff members, is collecting a passionate outpouring from friends and patrons of the store. The aim is to get the New York City Landmark Commission to reconsider and designate the building as a landmark, blocking the development.

In two weeks, more than 10,000 patrons have signed the petition. The number was up to 12,879 by Thursday afternoon.
Quote:
Despite the antique features that distinguish the three-floor shop—the stucco ceilings, the hand-made marble front-door frame, the 32-foot arched entrance.

the Landmark Preservation Commission didn’t granted individual and interior landmark status to the building in a decision on January 17. The property “lacks the architectural significance necessary to meet the criteria for designation,” stated the commission, giving green light to new construction.
Quote:
The owners of the building, the LeFrak real estate family and Vornado Realty Trust, have a big plan in mind: another luxury high-rise on a street that is becoming known for them. A spokesman from Vornado Realty Trust declined to comment about the project and requests for comment to LeFrak have not yet been returned.
People are acting like the bookstore will close forever when in reality they would only be re-locating searching for their new home somewhere in midtown and the beloved Rizzoli can live forever!

So which is it? Are the people signing petitions trying to save the building it's been in or the bookstore itself??
