The developers of 241 Fifth just purchased this site from Kushner. Hopefully, only the two corner buildings will be razed because the others are nice. I recall that Kush had a tentative deal to buy 273 and 275 Fifth, but it collapsed. He sued, but his case was withdrawn.

Kushner Cousin Sells NoMad Lot For Record-Setting $99M
http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/0...etting_99m.php

Quote:
Not many can say they set into motion one of the city's most expensive residential transactions to date over a relaxing cup of morning coffee, but according to a press release, it's true for Jared Kushner's cousin Jonathan Kushner of KRE. KRE, along with development partner Ironstate, have agreed to sell a parcel of three NoMad lots at 281 Fifth Avenue with air rights a-plenty to Jersey home developer Victor Homes for the outlandish sum of $99 million, or $750 per buildable square foot. The Journal refers to the sale that closed on Friday as "one of the highest rates paid for a residential site in Manhattan.

" Prior to the sale, the development firms had planned a 40-story, 132,000-square-foot ultra-luxury tower at the 30th Street and Fifth Avenue corner. Victor Homes, who last year completed a luxury high-rise at nearby 241 Fifth Avenue, is likely to follow up with similar plans.

Given the amount paid, I suspect that this will be a very nice tower. Fortunately, it appears that the nice buildings will be saved, and only the two structures nearest the corner will come down. (The third structure that will be razed is a piece of junk on the side street.)

241 5th Avenue is a nice structure. I expect something similarly nice here.

Yep agreed on both accounts. Just glad to see that corner eyesore building to go.

The three buildings that comprise this parcel are now completely empty. Hopefully, demolition will start soon, and something quite nice will rise on this blighted corner.

I can't wait for this junk to come down. It's one of the worst corners on 5th.

More big news from Yimby!

Apparently, this will be a very tall tower!

"... significant height for 281 Fifth Avenue, which the developers say will become one of the tallest buildings in New York City...."

it's safe to say this will at least be a skyscraper by SSC's standards.

http://eb5aig.com/portfolio-item/281-fifth-avenue/

Quote:
281 Fifth Avenue is located on the Southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and East 30th Street in the “NoMad” district of Midtown South Manhattan. Victor Group plans to construct a new 51-story, 250,065 gross square-foot condominium building with retail at the base and luxury residences on the upper floors. Since the Property is a corner parcel, coupled with the lower rise nature of the neighboring buildings, enables almost all apartments to have full panoramic views starting immediately above the 15th Floor. The lower apartments in the new building will enjoy attractive cityscapes of the surrounding area, predominantly characterized by architecturally significant pre-war buildings. The architect for this Project will be Rafael Vinoly.
another one for the cantilever crowd...

Never seen a development explicitly say to foreign investors: exchange your money for a green card at this development.

And the architecture fits such a crude and cynical enterprise.

I'm not bothered by the business strategy but BOY is that ugly. I came around on 432 Park once we started to see detailed renders, but given the bizarre shape of this, I'd have to say that Viñoly has created an unholy mess here that's unlikely to look any better in real life.

EDIT: I missed the part where those are just massing diagrams. I hope with all my might that Viñoly finds a way to more elegantly integrate the cantilevers that appear to be so integral to the developers' business plans.

Reminds me of one of those plastic tools used to make your own cigarettes. Nothing good going to come out of this design no matter how good the quality of the materials.

Demo permits have been filed for the two northern-most buildings. I hope that the other buildings on this block are saved.

This should be in the skyscraper section. It looks to be around 900 ft.

Meh! Another Vinoly. I think 432 park is perfect.

But now we may have 22 Thames and 281 5th Ave clones! I know what we've seen are massing's but I really hope Vinoly threads dangerously to be different here.

I wonder if this developer will get the adjacent sites on E 30th St., including the parking garage and the recently cleared lot where a small building was located.
