Singapore, Bali and a dash of Sri Lanka (Oct. 2013)

Last October I went on a two-week trip to South East, to visit a friend of mine who recently moved to Singapore (lucky bastard!) I spent most of my time in that city, but we also flew to Bali for a 5-day, a bit like a short holiday within a holiday.
On my flight to Singapore (first time I flew in an Airbus A380, amazing stuff!) I had a 6-hour stop-over at Bandaranaike Airport near Columbo, Sri Lanka. Because I'm not a big fan of wasting time at an airport, I decided to try to get through customs for a short look around. With good result, because instead of slowly dying of boredom I had a great 3-hour tuk-tuk tour in and around Negombo, the city closest to the airport. And I'm happy I did, because it was a lovely experience which most definitely triggered my interest in Sri Lanka as a possible future travel destination.

This first batch of photo's was taken during that short excursion to Negombo. Unfortunately I had my camera settings all mixed up (new camera syndrome), so the quality is not optimal. But I hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless!

01. Negombo is surrounded by water - the sea and mangrove forests - and for that reason a region fishing hub.

02. The fishing port.

03. Some fishermen still use traditional Dhows.

04. Others are not quite that nostalgic.

05. The fish market, the place to be for a nice fat tuna, mackerel, marlin or other big game fish to throw on the barbie.

06. Not far from the fishing market a first sign of Negombo's colonial past: St. Stephen's Anglican Church, built by the English somewhere around 1850. Negombo is home to an impressive collection of mosques, Buddhist and Hindu temples, and especially Catholic churches - during its heydays it was known as 'Little Rome'.

07. Next to the church lie the remnants of Negombo Fort (nowadays a prison), built in 1672 by the Dutch. The city was highly coveted by the colonial powers because of the premium quality cinnamon that was grown in the region. In 1643 the Portuguese were the first to control Negombo, followed by the Dutch, and lastly ownership switched to the British around 1800.

08. A small Hindu temple close-by.

09. Street scene towards the city center.

10. Colonial shophouses in 'downtown' Negombo, with a tuk-tuk.

11. Next to it a small goods market.

12. Another street scene.

13. A small canal runs right through the city, built centuries ago by the Dutch, but still in use. All in all the canal network is about 160km. in length, and runs all the way to Columbo, some 50 kilometers further to the south.

14. To wrap things up for nowa view in the other direction...

So much for Sri Lanka. Next destination: Singapore!

Thank you, guys

Time for Singapore, where I had the opportunity to stay at my friend's apartment. I arrived in Sgp. late in the evening, so I started my exploration the next day. This is my first impression.

15. No day starts with a good cup of coffee, so my first 'destination' was the balcony of the apartment where I stayed. Blessed with a view to die for!!!

16. My walk started downtown. This is where the Singapore River flows into Marina Bay.

17. Marina Bay Sands, perhaps not the prettiest building of all time, but it most definitely is impressive and iconic!

18. ...and very photogenic.

19. The pedestrian bridge across the Bay.

20. Linear aesthetics.

21. View between bridge pillars.

22. The Sands once more.

23. The CBD (unfortunately facing the sun).

24. Seen this one before...

25. The Gardens by the Bay.

26. View across the Bay towards the Singapore Flyer.

27. The 'Cloud Forest' conservatory.

28. View between the Supertrees.

29. The Skyway.

30. One of the two 'biodomes'.

31. View from the Skyway.

32. The Supertree Grove.

33. The first thing you see when you enter the 'Cloud Forest' conservatory.

34. Inside the conservatory.

35. A waterfall.

36. View from the bridge that connects the park with the Marina Bay Sands.

37. One of Singapore's principal money makers, the harbor.

38. Dusk.

39. Sunset.

40. View across Marina Bay.

41. And back 'home' again.

To be continued...
