Do G1 Santos

AMV próximo a estação Barreiros

VLT cruzando a Pinheiro Machado.

Once Santos had a great tram network, but the entire network has closed in seventies, because they thought trams are back dated. Now they are returning that backdated thinking again. how foolish they are, if they think they are backdated, why they are returning them? When it will be open for public?

Santos already returned tram in 200 as a heritage tourist service.

Thankfully Santos have done the correction almost after 44 years by returning tram in city. The new tram is almost different than old tram. The Old tram network was single coach, high floor, opened window, trolley pole and later bow collector, noisy, and slow, but much expanded and served not only the entire city, but also near suburbs. The new tram is heptaple coach, low floor, air-conditioned, panto-graph, calm and fast, but a small one route. The most interesting part is that the new modern tram system was converted from a goods train line, although that train line was abandoned.

The new tram route has crossed the former system in five places from north to south. When the first generation tram system was active, the rail line was used by goods train. Freight trains ran there until 2008. May be they have closed the goods train line for this second generation tram line (like Sydney).

Beside this, there is another tram system, which is heritage or tourist tram system. It runs on city center are, completely on city streets, which were served by previous tram system. The former system was larger in city center area also, the heritage tram routes are not much congested as there, but still it is a good network, and I think it is the largest heritage tram network in South Hemisphere, and also one of the large heritage tram system in world.

Could anyone write here details about the former tram routes following line by line.

Example—route 1 - from place A to place B via place C, D, E—following this format. So it will be easy to understand about the former network.

If anybody compare the first generation and second generation tramway systems in Santos, it is much different. The old network was large, it was 86 Kilometer, whereas the joint network of both present heritage and modern tram service is just 16 Kilometer.

The 86 Kilometer tram network was completely electrified around 1912. There were 48 passenger cars, 20 freight vehicles, 4 baggage wagons, a post office car, 2 water cars and thousands of parts. There was a brisk freight business and in 1917 it was claimed that residents of Santos enjoyed the highest tram-to-passenger ratio of any city in South America. There was a very beautiful seaside route from Aguiar to Hayden along José Menino beach. Route 2 ran upto Sao Vincente. Route 3 & 4 ran upto Jose Menino. Even they converted from trolley pole to Bow collector in 1933 for easy handling.

The reason for closure of old system was a mix of global anti-tram craze, faster and cheaper motorbus service, introduction of trolleybus etc. Trolleybus served faster, frequent, undisturbed, smooth service, when trams were slower, disturbed by private cars and buses, so became got stuck in streets by traffic jams. People then started to travel trolleybus than tram, so losses started, and between 5 years, it was much loss making. At that time, all but one (Rio) big Brazilian cities has already completely closed there tram network, so Santos was not far behind. Last tram ran in 1971, when rolling stocks, tracks, wires was much good condition due to regular maintenance.

13 years later, tram returned again in Santos, almost even not measurable for its tiny route length. In 1984 Mayor Paulo Gomes Barbosa dug up 900 m of double track on Avenida Bartolomeu de Gusmão along Embaré Beach, restrung wire and, on 10 June of that year, placed restored car 46 back into service. The CSTC ran Brazil's second tourist tramway (after Campinas) for two years. It was a part of former (much long) route through the beach. Unfortunately the line was far removed from Vila Matias depot, tram 46 had no shelter, security was a problem and maintenance was difficult. A new Santos mayor, Oswaldo Justo, closed the tramway in October 1986, after only two years of operation. Some Santistas wanted the mayor to do the same, means ‘retire’.

Thankfully trams returned again in Santos as two separate systems, one is heritage and another is modern. The heritage tram system opened in 2000 by some tram fans, now this system uses same rolling stocks, which were formerly used on the original network. They maintain the same design, both in interior and exterior, although not the old route boards. These are high floor cars, uses bow collector, and runs on many narrow-cobble stone streets, on single track. Most part of the heritage system uses the same streets which were used by former tram routes before 1971. The modern system opened 15 years after, that is in 2015, due to seeing the returned interest about tram, helped by heritage tram. These system uses low floor cars, and uses panto-graph, and serves as a high speed line using a former (now abandoned) goods train line..

I heard there are plans to construct many other modern tram lines. Those are—

1) Western extension of the current route up-to Barreiros. I think this is under construction. When it will be opened for public?

2) Further western extension upto Samarita.

3) A south eastern branch up-to Ponta da Praia.

4) A northern city center branch upto Valongo.

5) The valongo route will be extended towards more west, and then again south to meet the present line at Sao Vincente.

6) A completely separate tram line from Vincente de Carvalho to Rodoviario.

Could anyone say about the present status and planning about these routes?

I’m mostly interested for the city center extension, because it will run along some streets which were previously used by tram before 1971. So tram will return again on those area. Also, after this extension, there will be physically meeting of both tourist and modern tram. It will be met at two points. Although it will be a one way extension along those routes, unlike former system, which was both way. Note—the heritage routes are also one way. I think it was decided to build one way because downtown Santos is very much congested now.

FOOLISH AUTHORITY OF SANTOS

Santos’ great tram network was closed in 1971 for some blunt reasons –

The advent of buses and large scale competition meant that buses often ran the same routes as the trams and would jump in front in order to "grab" customers.

Buses are still present in Santos, even much more than before. Aren’t they competing with tram now? If now tram can attract more people than bus, I think if Santos Transport Authority should be patient, trams would sure survived, even defeat bus. Actually they started following other cities for withdrawing tram during seventies.

While buses were able to move into Santos’ expanding hinterland quicker and at less cost that the trams.
Current tram network has expanded many long distances, like Sao Vincente, and the infrastructure is more expensive like bus (includes masts, wires, stops etc.) But they are very popular for commuters than bus. If now they can re-make that costly infrastructure, why not past? Previous network was much ordinary than present. Actually they were lobbying the automobile industry, and the industry started marketing automobiles, like many cities around the world.

The belief that trams were outdated and old technology Meanwhile,
If tram is really outdated, why the transport authority returned it in Santos? It clearly shows that outdated technology idea was completely fake.

There was a belief that buses were cheaper to run than trams.
Although initial construction cost of tramway network is higher, but it is profitable for long term, because buses runs on diesel, which is being costly month by month over the world, and also decreasing from nature’s storage. Diesel can’t be made artificially, but electricity can make from various sources, like air, water, tide etc, so it is unlimited, and it is also pollution free.

The system was in a poor state of repair.

Many cities around the world has maintained tram, struggling over World War 2, by investing seriously on track & rolling stocks. Even I live in Kolkata, but my city has still a good tram network. When Medellin closed their tram in 1971, Kolkata’s tram was started to decline, but not closed, even two new routes were introduced later. So “impossible repairing” is just another lie.

Santos’ previous tram survived from 1909 to 1971 and closed for those fake reasons. Tram reopened in 2016. So are we sure that around 2078, Santos will not again close its tram fore some updated closure reasons?
