Detroit: Winter 2013-14 Phototour

Hey everyone! I had a chance to spend part of the New Year's Eve weekend and New Year's Day 2014 in Detroit, where I attended the Hockeytown Winter Festival, a celebration of the game of hockey held in downtown Detroit with numerous hockey games at Comerica Park over the course of 5 days leading up to the National Hockey League's Winter Classic that was held down the road in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Michigan Stadium.

Without further ado, let's start...

This first set of pics was taken on a day that started out mild, but got colder (and a bit snowy) into the night....

More to come, including highlights of the hockey games at Comerica Park, New Year's Eve celebrations, Ice Skating @ Campus Martius Park, among other things! Stay tunes!

I went for a skate in downtown Detroit's Campus Martius Park skating rink. Over the last few years, the skating rink has a popular seasonal destination for Metro Detroit and area families, fun-seekers, and in some cases, like myself, Detroit enthusiasts. The rink is always packed both day and night. It was designed to resemble Rockefeller Center's skating rink in NYC. I've been here twice at night, but this is my first time here in the day time.

Before skating, had some lunch @ American Coney Island, known for its famous Detroit Coney Island Hot Dogs

Chili Cheese Fries and two Coney Island Hot Dogs. I've been coming to Detroit for 12 years and this is the first time I have ever eaten a Detroit Coney Dog if you can believe it and it was GOOD!

National Theatre and downtown...

The National Theatre is the only theatre designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn that is still standing. It was built in 1911 and stood here at a time when Monroe street was once Detroit's elegant Theater District. Detroit real estate mogul Dan Gilbert and the city are negotiating a deal to purchase the building. Gilbert currently owns the properties in the block surrounding it.

Thanks, MyGeorge! Downtown Detroit has become a desirable place even in the winter! The Red Wings are one of the best-run teams in the NHL and they are my favorite!

I celebrated New Year's Eve in Campus Martius Park in Detroit for the fourth annual "D Drop", which is lesser-scaled version of NYC's ball drop. Around 10-15,000 people gathered near and around Campus Martius to help ring in the new year when midnight struck. This event was the idea of civic and business leaders in Detroit to showcase the city's true spirit on New Year's Eve right in the city's heart. A ball with a large red "D" is dropped from the top of the Chase Tower to mark the start of the new year. The event has grown substantially since it first started.

I was fortunate enough to be in the city for the Hockeytown Winter Festival and a pre-celebration concert with the Zac Brown Band at Joe Louis Arena.

Without further ado, New Year's Eve 2013 and celebrating the start of 2014 in the Motor City!

After the NHL Alumni Game at Comerica Park on New Year's Eve, took a stroll (as did others) through Grand Circus Park

I never thought I would say this, but this part of Woodward Avenue looks beautiful this time of the year. They should advertise this streetscape on those "Pure Michigan" billboards.
