CDA plans to run 22 feeder buses for BRTs

Islamabad - The Capital Development Authority would operate feeder buses for the metro routes to facilitate the residents, CDA officials said yesterday.

They said the CDA is in advance stage of planning to run 22 buses.

On the designated routes, a bus will operate after 30 minutes time.

The process for selection of the bus operators is likely to be commenced in December this year and it is expected that the feeder routes would be operational within four month time.

The initial estimate for operation and maintenance of the feeder buses is Rs 200 to 250 million per annum.

The transparent process for hiring of the bus operators for operation and maintenance of the buses would be carried out in transparent manner at the earliest, the officials said.
It is expected that the buses would not only facilitate the commuters embarking the metro bus service but also the general public.

The CDA has planned four routes for this purpose.

First route will be from Bhara Kahu up to Marghzar Zoo covering Dhokri, Aabpara, Federal Government Services Hospital (Policlinic) and F-6 sector.

The second route would be from Rawat to Faisal Mosque.

The third route will be from Tarnol up to Fatima Jinnah (F-9) Park/Ibn-e-Seena Road Metro Station and would cover sector G-13 and in between areas of G and F Series sectors including Markaz G-9 (Karachi Company).

The fourth route will operate from IJ Principal Road metro station to the Railway Carriage Factory.

The metro bus service is facing passenger shortage at certain stations and the feeder buses would help increase its load.

The metro service was made operational some six months ago to facilitate the commuters of the twin cities.

This time, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy has scored the BRT systems in Pakistan as well. The Islamabad Metrobus system scored as Bronze (64 points) and the Lahore Metrobus system scored as a Basic BRT system (52 points).

Of the systems scored, 15 are classified as gold, 28 as silver, 41 as bronze, and 6 as “basic” BRT, indicating a minimum of BRT features, but not quite qualifying as best practice. Eight did not qualify as BRT.

Five plazas to be built along metrobus route

The capital’s civic agency has decided to construct five “park and ride” plazas at different locations of Blue Area, the city’s busiest commercial centre.

The move aims at making Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Project more successful, as parking plazas will be established at locations in the close vicinity of five metro bus stations along the Jinnah Avenue.

The CDA Board has approved the project.

According to the board decision, the lower ground, ground and first floor of the multi-storey parking plazas will be used for commercial purposes to make the venture self-sustainable.

Plazas will be constructed along stations including Kachehri Station at F-8/G-8, PIMS Hospital Station at F-8/G-8, North of 7th Avenue Station at F-7/G-7, Stock Exchange Station at F-7/G-7, and south of Parade Ground Station at F-6/G-6.

“The move is aimed to enhance ridership of the metro buses, which is on the lower side in Islamabad-section of the project,” said a CDA board member.

Monorail from Zeropoint to Rawat on cards

The bogeys of the monorail will be imported from China and Pakistan Railways will assist in laying the railways tracks. The monorail would be equipped with all the modern facilities, the sources added.
