Had the privilege of hanging out with my friends at Wolfe Air for the Amazon PrimeAir photo shoot. Was able to talk to the head of Amazon Air and what their plans are for additional aircraft. They have several special liveries coming down the pipe.

Did you meet anyone from ATSG or unidentified European chappies who would not really say who they worked for Woody?

On my visit to PAE on 3/8/16 I recorded a number of B767's, which were unmarked:

1. A B767-200 by the derelict B787, I suspect this is VH007, referred to above.
2. A FDX B767-300, stored opposite B747 LN:1519
3. A FDX B767-300, opposite B747 LN.1534
4. A FDX B767-300 in the factory, ahead of KAL B747 Ln. 1537, believe there was another close by, also a B767-300.

Any help, greatly appreciated.

Boeing receives first contracts for KC-46A production

Aug. 18, 2016: Boeing received the first two contracts for production of the KC-46A aerial refueling tanker, the company announced.

From the press release:

EVERETT, Wash., Aug. 18, 2016 – The U.S. Air Force awarded Boeing [NYSE: BA] $2.8 billion on Aug. 18 for KC-46A tanker low-rate initial production.

The award includes the first two “production lots” of 7 and 12 planes respectively, as well as spare parts. Including future options, Boeing plans to build a total of 179 of the 767-based refueling aircraft for the Air Force to replace their KC-135 fleet.

“The KC-46 tanker will provide the Air Force unprecedented refueling capabilities, operational flexibility and combat readiness,” said Leanne Caret, Boeing Defense, Space & Security president and CEO. “It’s an important day for the company and program. We’re excited about building low-rate initial production aircraft, and it’s only possible because of the hard work of the joint Boeing-Air Force team.”

1st of these slots - 1 LRIP frames VH005-VH011 (6 of 7 already assembled and are undergoing re-work)
2 LRIP - VH012-VH023

3rd production set should be normal rate at full spec without need of any re-work.

Got to attend the Boeing Family Day and got to see how the GE engines for the Fedex 767's are finished before attaching to the airframe.

Qantas never installed winglets.

It's probably not interesting enough to do it now together with the cargo conversion. Considering it's age it would not recoup the investment.

Today the first KC-46A test frame (N461FT) which is actually only a 767-2C variant and not a functional tanker, returned to PAE to begin the rework into a functioning KC-46A. Boeing is set to deliver 18 tankers by Jan 2018. The 4 test frames, plus the remaining 14 from production, of which 7 KC-46A's have been produced and are stored around PAE. So Boeing has just over a year to build 7 more frames, outfit them and deliver.
